Any short pilots out there? - Anthro measurements

Hey All,

Does anybody have experience with the anthro situation for SNAs who are on the shorter side? Any short Naval Aviators out there? I'm a male and 66 inches tall, (5’6”). Is my short stature going to be an issue for qualifying on airframes? I checked NAVAIR 3710.1, but I still have some concerns. It seems like most posts about the height topic are coming from the tall dudes but little insight for those with short stature.

Any information is helpful information. Thanks!

I’m almost certain I’ve seen posts from female student aviators/applicants here with concerns on height from the shorter “side” of things.

Even so, check out the NAMI and NAVAIR guides, the guidance there is cut and dry.

You are well within standards for height (SNA 62”-77”). The other measurements might trip you up. Anthropometric measurements: Sitting height, butt-knee length, and thumb-tip reach.
Check out this instruction.

The only people I ever saw get airframe limited because they were too short were much shorter than you - thinking particularly of one or two women who were right at 5'0" and were on the lower limit for ejection seat weights. I don't recall any of them being told that they could never fly anything, just that they were airframe limited. Ultimately you'll have to run the NAMI gauntlet and see, but you're probably fine.

IMO not worth stressing about. Nothing you can do about it anyway, and there are plenty of short people flying every airframe in the inventory. Admirals even. There are also about a million health conditions that NAMI could discover. You could probably spend 25 hours a day stressing about NAMI if you really thought about it too much. However most of us make it through just fine, anthros, and otherwise.

Wouldnt worry about it.

Guy in my OCS was a short king at like 5'4. He was only DQed from jets.
A girl in my class was also told she was too short for jets. When she was re-measured at Pensacola with the more precise anthros, she was re-qualified for all airframes.

Smidge over 5'4 and I was only DQ'd from the Harrier and a Coast Guard helicopter. Wasn't DQ'd from anything in the Navy actual.

DQ'd from the worst things. Nice! Is going Harriers even a valid threat anymore? "Do all the work, bring a half bomb to the fight for 3 minutes and then RTB" classic harriers.

Thread revival to see if anyone has any experieces/ has seen smaller female pilots. I have searched threads and I 100% understand that Anthros are different for everyone and you cant assume proportions based on height/weight however, I am a 62 inch female(barely), atheltic build ~130 lbs. I know that I meet weight/height minimums, but if I am right at the cusp of the inital height requirement, is there even a chance that I would meet any of the anthromet requirements? I read up on some of the publications on how to measure and the specific codes that each pipeline require. I have been told that you have to fit for at least 2 platforms and their trainers, etc. Im mostly worried about the thumb tip reach. I only ask because I really dont know what other community I would be interested in if I get NAMI whammied. I tried to do a self mesure but I feel like im overshooting my numbers and the ranges between each "code" are very small I.e 26.0 in to 26.4 inch. I would find it hard that the navy would include the minimums but then for all anthros the minimims arent within the range for a female who is right at 62 inches .... Im leaving for OCS soon but wanted to keep my expetations low as I know I am a smaller female. ALSO if I dont meet any, could I potentially qualify as an NFO? I dont know the requirements for that. OAR: 56 AQR - 7 PFAR - 8 FOFAR - 7 Bachelor Degree GPA: 3.3 , Designetor: SNA - ISEL

Thanks all!!

My anthros had me at 5’3.6” I was only disqualified from Harriers and E2/C2 pilot, but one plane was for knee to butt length and the other was for sitting height. I’ve known people shorter than I am in MPRA land, both pilot and NFO.

There was a guy and girl in my OCS class who were the same height. Guy was anthro’ed out then DORed out of OCS. Girl qualified for SNA. It’s all about your proportions.

If you end up qualified for SNA but DQed from a platform you’re interested in, I’d recommend a re-measure in Pensacola.

I saw multiple people get the green light for all pipelines on their 2nd measurement bc small errors were not uncommon.
Best of luck.

You won’t get your anthro done until after you’ve already commissioned and you’re at Pensacola. They don’t do it at OCS, so you more than likely won’t have the chance to DOR/separate from the Navy, you’d have to redesignate.
The measurements for NFO give you a little more breathing room so I’d imagine if you end up being close for SNA, you’d be fine for SNFO. But I’m sure you’ll be fine, there’s very few women I’ve seen get DQ for anthro (being too small/short). Just do as much research as you can and understand the potential outcomes

I think I remember doing measurements when I was at OCS doing the initial flight physical, but the ones in Pensacola were definitely official

This is just anecdotal but I’m 5’5” and qualified for everything; another buddy of mine is 5’4” and recently selected strike. It really just depends on the individual limb measurements which you can find
