sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

The COP has a series of yes-no questions and the way they've been explained is that, answering yes is like a demerit that likely won't but could impact your FINSEL. One of those questions is whether you've told your employer your ship date.

I also haven't been personally interviewed yet for my background check. I'll probably just tell my employer and bite the bullet on the COP form. Just wanted to see if anyone had any alternative input.

Thanks though!
Yeah idk how not telling your employer could affect you, but they’ll have to find out at some point. Either way, I’d take a look at those rights and at least kinda familiarize yourself with them in case anything happens.

FWIW, I didn’t tell my employer until everything was official and I had my orders to OCS, and that was about 2 or 3 weeks before I shipped out. I don’t even think they were interviewed because they legit didn’t know about anything until I told them.

Anyway, lmk if I can help and I’ll do my best to answer

Thanks I really appreciate that. I'm planning to tell them sooner because I'm planning on leaving a bit prior to when I'll probably get my orders mostly to move stuff home, focus on prepping some more, and do a bit of traveling (I plan to leave end of June when my lease ends and expect my orders in July and my expected OCS date is August 23).

I think you're misinterpreting the intent of the form/question. On most government (Navy) forms like this, there's always a "reverse negative" question where answering yes (or no) will be the "correct" answer when all the other questions "should" be answered the opposite. You'll see this on medical forms as well. FAA forms are like that as well. So are ATF forms.

Of all of the ways to get hung up in the accession process, I don't think answering yes to this question is one of them.

I appreciate the detailed response! I'm not worried about my employer taking adverse action when I tell them. I'm actually worried about the Navy taking adverse action against me for telling them.

Specifically, the COP says/infers that I should not tell my employer about my ship date. However, I'd rather my employer hear from me than be surprised when someone calls for a security clearance.

I guess my specific question is when should I expect someone to call my employer to ask questions for my security clearance so I can tell them in advance while answering "yes" to the COP question as late as possible.

You are still stuck on this COP form? @elariosa95 is right.

Haha yea. I work in a legal-adjacent field where phrasing needs to be precise and specific so these types of wording issues get me. It will be something I'm definitely working on unlearning for the Navy. 😅

Also my recruiters lack of information/answers to my questions bugs me a bit.

The enlisted Delayed Entry Program kids do these forms almost monthly. It's more so to track things, mainly legal/medical/etc.

For the employer, similarly, there's no right or wrong saying yes or no, whatever the actual answer is. It might be good to know in which you started a new job or left your current one so your SF-86 is updated accordingly. However, if you plan to stay with the current job until you ship out, just say "no" but then mention "I plan to inform employer 2-3 weeks prior to OCS ship date". Easy.

Suggest similar mindset for other questions/forms.

Since I have you here, if you have plans to travel overseas you need to inform your recruiter ASAP and complete additional paperwork. Aside from drugs/legal, not telling your recruiter this can get you in trouble.

Thanks for the heads up. I plan to travel w/in the continental US / not abroad and have already told my recruiter about that just to make sure there wouldn't be any issues.

I submitted my package this Tuesday, Im I-SEL for Pilot. Does anyone know when I might hear back? I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but I’m already in the Navy.

So if I have something that requires a waiver from NAMI, should I worry about submitting for it right now? Or following the commissioning physical?
Are you prior enlisted or a civilian? MEPS/N3M won’t screen for aviation. Make sure you have any relevant documents to treatment regarding your condition for your NAMI waiver and bring a copy of them to OCS with you. I went to OCS a few years ago so I’m not sure if it’s improved but communication between NHCNE and OTCN was slow and inconsistent. Aviation medicine would request documents from OCS students and it would take weeks to pass that to them, if it made it to them at all. The best time to provide documentation is at your initial flight physical when you first arrive at OCS. Myself and plenty of classmates spent months after graduation in student pool due to delays in flight physical processing.

I was reading online about how during boot camp Navy Federal Credit Union reps will come to help the enlisted guys get set up if they want. Does the same thing happen at OCS, or should we just expect to handle stuff like that after graduation?

We didn’t have it at OCS. Just for star cards. Pretty sure you can get Navy Fed prior to reporting to OCS.

I’m currently enlisted. My commissioning physical incorporated SNA requirements for eyes, audiogram and other things, so I was wondering if I was going to have to do my flight physical and mental health waiver (which would push me exceedingly close to my PRD)
