Am I weird for hoping for anything except prop? Why’s rotary getting all the hate?

I just had a family friend go through flight school and just recently finished advanced rotary... he told me to expect about 60% of people will get selected for helos.

I want P8s or fighters, but I am mentally preparing for helos.

also, when a Romeo hard lands on your CG flight deck in the South China Sea during a storm and cracks the flight deck, it left a bad taste in my mouth

Welp recruiter just texted saying he got word the pilot boards are closed the rest of FY27, so one admin error pushed me out another year.

I think it’s the idea that people show up wanting to be the next Maverick and end up seeing how “needs of the navy” trumps everything

Rotary is super cool imo, a lot of the people I know who did it love it

Met a retired P3 guy the other day and told him that if I can’t get tactical (which statistically I won’t) that I want P8. Bro said “that’s called job security”

P-8s might not be as “tactical” as the other platforms, but at least my instrument rating actually means something in my community

I'll take that type rating any day. P8's are the best platform in terms of return of benefit. twice or even three times as many flight hours, multi time. doesn't get better than that.

Tbh, the practical side of me would prefer P8s seems like an easier QOL than the fighter community.

Idk what the hate with rotary is. I understand maybe you won’t get an airline job after but there’s a lot good heilo jobs in the civilian sector and mil guys are 100% first pick

rotary counts as total time and military guys get their Unrestricted ATP at 750 so they can go commuters for a couple years. I dont really get the hate either.

MyNavyHR board schedule hasn't been updated yet, so you still have some hope

I can check the SharePoint and see if they've posted a new board schedule. If the board is cancelled, there will be a board remark/note if they're still taking I-SEL applicants. I'll try to keep up with updates but the first person to go to would be your recruiter. They'll know before I do.

Recruiting command of our region just called me to verify I was denying SNFO. They told me the fiscal year of pilots is filled and they would only be taking BCDP and ISEL.

This. You’ll probably need some fixed wing time but some airlines have rotary transition programs to bridge that gap into the 121 world
