Graduation

I am graduating at 4 1/4 years (December 2007). The issue is the people who are in charge of the graduation ceremony (walking), won't let people walk in June 2007, unless you are finished with classes NLT summer 2007. This effectively means I cannot walk until June 2008. I am supposed to leave for OCS ~January 2008. Does anyone have any idea if after I finish OCS I will be able to take some leave to come back and graduate/walk? I would hate to never get to walk.

Honestly, what's the big deal? I'm graduating in May and have no interest in or intention of walking. You should take pride in the hard work that went into your diploma, not the 15 seconds you'll be on the dais. You've got much more important things to worry about, like learning how to be a good officer. ;)

I'm with Brett. After my last class, I walked my ass right off campus. I did this three times - high school, undergrad and grad. I got all three diplomas in the mail and they are still rolled up in their respective card board mailing tubes.

You're not a chick are you? This is sort of like weddings. Guys - Save money, Justice of the Peace, sign the friggin license and head for the hotel. Girls - Spent lots of money, big ceremony and reception, refuse to give a BJ at the hotel (after all they're married now......) :D

Hahaha no not a chick. But I have been here for 4 years and have a ton of friends here. So it would be nice to walk with them. Also, it would be cool to walk with the 15-20 other bros (read: I am a 'frat guy') that will be graduating at the same time. Besides, it is generally far from a sober event. What are the chances I can get leave after finishing OCS?

We had the other OC from GMI get leave FROM OCS to walk at GMI's commencement. It can be done.

API, have to ask Student Control...

RHPF, I don't blame you a bit...I would want to walk as well. Have you spoken with the administration (Dean, VP, Pres.) about your specific circumstances? If I was in your shoes, I would make sure they know your situation and your wish to be able to walk. Also, is there not a graduation in December for your school? Good luck on the situation.

Ouch...that's lousy. Sounds like grounds for anullment to me.:D

As far as the graduation thing goes....they are highly overrated. I personally don't get the appeal. You can party with your friends your way when you finish. I blew mine off.

I graduate in May and have been informed by my parents they have already reserved 4 hotel rooms. This is why I walk at graduation. Then again, isn't life all about making the senior people happy?

You have friends at College, you will have "shipmates" at OCS. Its a totally differnt deal and connection you build when you go through the suck with another person and learn more about them in a few weeks then you thought possible. You will never be as comfortable with anyone as you are with your classmates. For instance I wont piss in front of my girlfriend, but the idea of standing 3 feet away from a naked man taking a crap while I towel off after a shower and have a face to face discussion about how much we hate Motivational laps is totally normal now. Seriously if you want to do it there are ways like was said but you may find once you get there that the idea of leaving for something like this when the rest of your class is gonna be doing liberty isnt something you want to do.

I just like the one kid that was only around for 2 days when we were first in the squadbay for a length of time.

Him: "Hey are they gonna put doors back on the toilets..... and do we all shower in there at once?"

Me: "You best just get over that crap right now."

And while no I dont particularly enjoy the situation it just becomes so common place as to be something that you excuse as Normal life in a squadbay.

Many schools don't even give you your real diploma at graduation, so it's a waste of time really.

My graduation and commissioning were 2 weeks apart. Pretty easy to choose between asking the family to attend a ceremony with hundreds of people/no individual recognition and one with just 10.
