Wouldn't that instead have the opposite effect? Especially when coming from up high...

Now why would you say that? I don't know about you, but any time my parents told me not to do something... :icon_smil

More stupidity. Meanwhile, an edict from on high was issued to aggressively eliminate any use of the term "Shocker" IRT the G.

Brett

I'm sure that will be as effective with crews and maintainers as other edicts such "Fighting Falcon" "Lighting II", "Thunderbolt II", Stratofortress, Pegasus, Hermes, Sentry, Skywarrior, Skytrain and many other planes that had official names that were never used except in press releases.

Normally, I would agree that the grass roots thing is possible, but in this case, they're basing their objection on the fact that the term is obscene and sexually explicit, therefore, they're pretty fucking serious about it. As much as I personally like "Shocker," they kind of have a point.

And the official name is slang for a turd. So I'd say they don't have much room to object (not that it'll stop them).

I just somehow can't picture guys saying they're "Grizzly drivers". And someday some VAQ skipper who's retiring anyway will call in with "501, Shocker ball..."

But see ... since I'm not in/of your depraved generation ....

When I first heard the term "SHOCKER" ... I thought: perfect. It's an electronic jammer .... it 'shocks' the shit outta' the bad guys' emiters ....

And then you guys had to go and ruin it w/ your personal perversions .... :)

There's really no good reason to not just use "rhino" for the ball call, as the G is essentially a slightly heavier 5-wet F model. In fact, I thought that was the plan all along - may still be AFAIK. Stupid trade media.

I figured it was just a nice way of saying that they were worried Airman Bob on the sound-powered phones would mishear and dial up the Prowler weight setting one night.

Well, you're never going to have Prowler and Growler operating from one deck, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I didn't see it in the thread if a pilot had selected or not yet - but one of our studs who just finished before I left for this recent boat to Lead Safe just selected Growlers - the first pilot I know of,(VT-21 stud).
So its happening.
I'll tell you from an instructor standpoint - I tell my studs if I were in their shoes, without any doubt, I would select Growlers. You do lose bomb dropping - but lets be real, that isn't that often - strafing, now that's another story.
Anyways, a chance to develop new tactics, refine existing ones, and blow pre-conceived notions about what a jamming aircraft can do with self defense! Anyways, first stud is heading up there shortly.

The first CAT I class at the RAG solo'd a few days ago, so they're already making new Growler aircrew.

We beat the swagger out of'em and made them buy us beer...

But seriously, good on'em. Those dudes will be at the cutting edge of the community. Yeah, I'm glad I'm able to fly the Prowler. But I wish I were making the transition this time around. As was stated before... new jet, new tactics, new generation. It will definitely be interesting to see just what we can make this jet do. In terms of both the traditional mission and the current mission.
