How should I go about figuring this out? Asking directly, requesting an OR? Should I just try and continue working with my current recruiter instead?
Pro tip: don't get eye surgery exclusively to be an SNA, get it because the quality of life improvements are worth it.
I got SMILE done because I was tired of having to wear glasses and contacts all the time and the company that laid me off during COVID gave me a huge check to fuck off. Getting picked up for SNA was just a bonus and it worked out in the end, but that doesn't always happen.
I am in the same boat somewhat. I went to my eye doctor and they measured my hyperopia to be a +3.00 which is right at the limit for SNA. Im at a bit of a crossroad because I do not want to risk getting through meps, selection, OCS, etc. and then getting dqed in pennsicola because of it. I risk having to switch designations and serving 4 years in a different job at that point. Debating on if going the corrective eye surgery route (Lasik) is the better option or not worrying about it and hoping NAMI would come up with the same measurment as my primary eye docotr and pass me. Andy advice?
like I said, the real question would be asking yourself if it makes your current quality of life better. I would avoid making important decisions like that based solely on your navy career, but it's ultimately your decision.
Getting it done on the Navy's dime is also an option, but that's something you'd have to work out in your pipeline; I have a buddy who wants to get his eye surgery corrected but we're in the middle of our FRS syllabus so it might not be possible for a while
Side note: it's not the end of the world to get re-designated. There are plenty of officer jobs that have their own benefits, and there's always something for everyone
You’re most likely to be disqualified at OCS bc the initial flight physical is *in depth*. Took all day.

NAMI in Pensacola is just a quick, double check of their work. Took less than 10 minutes.

Mine took place over several months bc of stuff that happened during OCS, so that was fun
Same with mine.
I was mostly referring to the actual day with the flight doc since their primary concern is their vision.
