Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

Probably the best military mind in our 4 star cadre.
Besides the fact that ADM Cooper would like a word, probably a result of the fact that no geographic COCOMs are from the Army.

Make no mistake - if we get in a conflict with China over a Taiwan invasion, an Army general will be appointed to lead the operation.

If SECDEF ahem SECWAR were competent, he'd require admirals to remove their warfare devices in the same vein as CMCs lose their rating.

Let’s say I’m not a nuc and not smart enough to understand … but what? Not asking to be a dick, but for my own understanding …

Community pettiness at the flag level exists and is going to get people killed the same as it got people killed when Gen MacArthur and ADM Nimitz clashed.

The only reason we won the Pacific is that we had a vastly superior technological advantage over the Japanese, because our C2 did everything they possibly could to lose the war.

The COCOM construct is meant to mitigate this, but it doesn't work when INDPOPACOM is viewed as the highest rank a Navy officer can achieve because no other branch has ever held the position.

And people at the O6 and below level hold loyalty to the warfare device over the rank. So aviators think Pappy is the best admiral ever and SWOs think that Pappy got the job over ____ because of politics.

And I don't give a shit because every once in a while someone gets a bright idea to make a submarine officer an important 3 or 4 star, forgetting that we have no idea how to exercise organizational leadership (see: Jimmy Carter), like when a woman wants to have another child after forgetting the excrutiating pain that came with labor.

I can think of a few others...and our C2, while definitely lacking in today's world was far better than most others at the time to include the Japanese.

It's literally a JPME study when ADM Spruance sent dozens of aviators to their death because he believed that he was smarter than his aviator chief of staff.

You have to factor wind into fuel? Oops.

But that was during Luzon so we had already won.

True to JPME, the course blames the chief of staff instead of the decision maker, similar to how it's apparently General Westmorland's fault we lost Vietnam.

But now we name monuments after Spruance, even though he had the maturity of a 14 year old girl.

Every leader has his flaws, even great ones like Admiral Spruance, but a single instance during a huge war does not equal bad C2 overall.

The maturity of a 14 year old girl, really? Spruance was one of the more mature and even-handed military leaders of the war, in one chock full of massive egos and drama queens along with stunning incompetence. It is bizarre and frankly stupid statements like this that undercut some of your more reasoned arguments.

So removing warfare insignia after a minimum of nearly 30 years in that community is supposed to fix that?

And if you make the additional contention that submariners shouldn't receive COCOM commands, you're basically saying those distinctions should still matter.

Which event do you think you're talking about, because it's certainly not Luzon? I assume you think you're rambling about the Philippine Sea long range sunset launch. Spruance's chief of staff was Cal Moore, who very much was not an aviator. Are you talking about his disagreement with Mitscher (TF 58 commander), which was related but not really the event you're talking about?

To reiterate Flash's point, Spruance was probably the most even keeled Flag of General officer at that level in any US force. Saying he has the maturity of a 14 year old girl is absolute insanity.
