Wow talk about an article loaded with propaganda and bullshit... theres a segment of the population that puts cats in microwaves too but you don't see alot of headlines stating "Theres a segment of the cooking community that will put cats in a microwave." And ground squirrels? They're prairie dogs and the reason you can shoot as many as you want is because they are a problem species.
The photo looks like it could have been staged too. A photographer with an agenda could have a friend with a rifle dress up like the rapist in deliverance and then run out there real quick behind the sign so he can snap a pick. I mean if it were a hunter don't you think that he would have seen/heard this photog coming up 50 feet behind him? The kind of guy thats going to poach on restricted lands is probably not the kind of guy that is going to say, "Please can I have the film out of your camera".
I'm a little skeptical of the claims of National Guard tanks being shot and weekends being war zone. I'm not saying its never happened, but if you are sitting in your M-1 with a gasoline turbine running, the AC, Radios, and full head gear on, how certain can you be that you just heard a small bore (prairie dog hunters use .204's, .243's, 22-250's etc.) single round hit the outside of your tank? I'm not doubting that it has happened, but I'm skeptical that its a regular occurance.
It pisses me off when the shooting community is portrayed as a bunch of nut jobs that shoot at anything that moves. The shooting community as a whole would not condone the actions of these few people. The fact of the matter is that the people that do these things are irresponsible/immature assholes. Their irresponsible actions are probably not limited to what they do with their firearms. You can be just as dangerous and irresponsible with a new Mustang as you can be with a firearm, and there are many many people that prove that everyday.
