A Million Questions

I have a million questions about the Navy, BDCP program, OCS, and my job: Surface Warfare. I have a habit of getting myself into things and then figuring out how to handle the situation. I'm currently waiting to be sworn...been waiting for eights months. To narrow it down i have three main question: How much am I REALLY going to get paid?, What is OCS like?(for a female), and How is it being a Surface Warfare Officer?

Paid - US dollars deposited into your bank account
OCS - same as for a male, except you squat to pee and bleed a little more
SWO - sucks (this is a Naval Aviation site, what did you expect me to say?)

Please read the Air Warriors Standard Operating Procedure and use the search function. You will find these questions have been asked and answered countless times.

It depends a lot on your location.

As a brand new ENS? Around 48K or so per year. After a few years, you can expect to make probably 80-100K a year as a LT. Of course, that is all dependent on location, and designator ( as a SWO you won't be making flight pay like aviators, other incentive pays etc). I'm sure An ENS in San Diego could pull in closer to 60K. A JG over here in Guam pulls in about 92K a year. A LT in Pensacola may only make 80K or so.

Bottom line: I make almost double what I would as a civilian in the Aerospace Engineering field if I decided to use my degree. You will be paid well and will be able to live within your means where you're stationed. You won't be rich in the military, but you'll certainly be comfortable.

You can check out the military pay scales (http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables.html) to see how the pay is arranged. Of course there are other allowances (housing and food) that will be added on top of that, but it will give you a starting point.

if you go on usnavyocs.com under the "swo" category, theres a really good forum that's a sticky at the top called general swo gouge...that might help give you a good overveiw of swo life

Yeah, how did you end up getting into all of this without knowing about it? I would have definitely gone for SNA or SNFO blindly, but not SWO!

Also recommend SailorBob.com, which is SWO-oriented

As I've learned from being around SWOs, and an all-too-well-known saying among air types: Even your best day as a SWO won't be as good as your worst day in aviation. Do what you have to do and transition ASAP!.. before you turn 28 or let the ship life make you bitter!
From what I've heard, you'll qualify SWO (have to) within 18 months of your first ship tour (27 months total). Second tour is 18 months and provided that you select department head, you can apply for the $75k bonus over 5 years. That on top of base pay and BAH, sea pay, family sep (which you'll get a lot of if you have a family because you'll be GONE A LOT), it's not bad. Without doing too much public math, I'd say you break even with most aviators once you have a few years under your belt. Job satisfaction aside, that is ;-)

If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.

I fully expected this to be a gay porn sight. Which is why I went straight there before I finished reading this thread.
