Academic Forgiveness

All previous/current slackers :

Even though the Navy does their own GPA calculation from your transcript...most of your schools may have this Academic Forgiveness policy. Mine at the University of Oklahoma was buried in the depths of their webpage...probably for a reason. You might want to talk to your academic advisor about this. If anything you can include in your motivational statement that "Due to an increase in my academic performance over an extended period of time...I was foregiven by my college/university." It couldn't hurt and it may show the board that you are proactive about improving yourself. Here is the policy for my school.

ACADEMIC REPRIEVE POLICY

The Reprieve Policy allows students to request that one or two semesters’ grades be excluded from the calculation of the combined retention/graduation grade point average. (this is what they look at) Grades from courses taken during the reprieved term(s) will remain on the student’s permanent record, but will only be calculated into the student’s cumulative grade point average. A student may request an academic reprieve if the following criteria are met:
  • The student must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate on the Norman campus;
  • at least three years must have elapsed between the period in which the grades being requested to be reprieved were earned and the reprieve request; and
  • prior to requesting the reprieve, the student must have earned at least a 2.00 grade point average with no grade lower than C in all regularly graded coursework (minimum of 12 semester credit hours), excluding activity and performance courses. This coursework may be completed at any accredited higher education institution.
The request may be for one semester/term or two consecutive semesters/terms. If the reprieve is awarded, all grades and hours during the enrollment period are excluded from the retention/graduation grade point average. Coursework with a passing grade included in a reprieved semester may be used to demonstrate competency in the subject matter. However, the coursework may not be used to fulfill credit hour requirements. If the student’s request is for two consecutive semesters/terms, the institution may choose to reprieve only one semester.
The student may not receive more than one academic reprieve during his/her academic career. The student will not be eligible to receive a reprieve if a previous reprieve request was denied at the University of Oklahoma.
The request form is available in Academic Records. Students should contact their college concerning the process for requesting a reprieve.

the combined retention gpa is all of your courses combined..transfers, everything.. when you go to a prospective employer and say "my gpa is 3.9..." its the combined retention gpa..this is the last gpa on list of gpa's on your transcript..mine at ou says OU COM RET X.XX that is the biggy..

The Navy (according to my OR)...calculates every single grade, forgiven or not. Even though the two GPA's won't match, it shows effort on your part to better it. (The GPA)

I'm not sure about that...I think a B is still counted as 3 points in the (A = 4, B =3, C=2) point system...anyone in the know, please clarify.

Then there is the whole....if you do well in school..this shouldn't matter but hey, some of us like to do things the hard way. ;)

This concept to me is completely bizarre. Maybe it's late and I'm not understanding very well, but it looks like this policy takes your GPA, arbitrarily drops out your worst semesters, and gives you a new shinier GPA that is essentially fake. If you truly improved throughout college, that will be obvious on your transcripts and (I assume) be noted by the board. Bragging in your motivational statement about being "forgiven" sounds to me like you were trying to get a quick boost and that your GPA doesn't reflect the reality that you got some bad grades.

I agree bugsmasher...but the board at the University has to review it and grant it on a case by case basis. If anything at least it shows that you were forgiven for poor performance based on improved performance. It's like getting a waiver by the military for DUI, medical..whatever...it happened, and everybody knows it happened...but at least you took the effort to get it waivered...which shows initiative. I agree, it is simply cosmetic...obviously it serves some purpose or they wouldn't have such a thing.

Very interesting. I guess this is better than the "If your roomate dies, you get a 4.0 for the semester" clause found at most military academies/colleges.:D

If Tommy Harris and Adrian Peterson can pass those classes, it's scary that you would have to take them over again. Did you weave a lop-sided basket or something?

and what state do these players come from....that we need the lawyers to clear? :p

Well, this one is from Florida:

Don't worry about those felony gun charges and lack of high school diploma. As long as you finish high school on the internet, you are good to go. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!! He has his on-line degree, his ankle monitoring device and he is Stoops has him ready to go.

Nice standards.

Jackass,

I agree, AP is a nice person. I met him when he was on his recruiting trip to Austin. He made a good choice on where to go to school, there is no way he would have stayed eligible at Texas.

Coursework with a passing grade included in a reprieved semester may be used to demonstrate competency in the subject matter. However, the coursework may not be used to fulfill credit hour requirements.

So does this mean that if you took any core requirements during this semester it no longer counts towards your credit hour requirements to graduate? If this is the case, wouldn't that mean that you would have to take them over again anyways so you would have those classes to graduate.

We have something like this at UC, but you can replace an "F" with another grade if you take the class over again. I'm not completely sure how it works and I don't plan on having to figure it out. ;)

yeah you have to retake it i believe..but most people who use the academic reprieve policy have already retaken the class...and gotten a better grade (notice you have to wait at least 3 years before asking for the academic forgiveness)...so it should not matter then if it is stricken.
