Just saw the new CENTCOM commander on CNN. What do you think of him? Can a Navy guy - someone without land warfare experience - effectively run the war?
Also he's a NFO - what community and what was his rep?
He is not 'running' the land wars in Afghanistan or Iraq on a day to day basis, that is left to the Generals in charge of the forces in the respective countries, Lt Gen Eikenberry and Gen Patreaus. I believe he was selected for the CENTCOM job because DOD leadership liked how he led PACOM and handled relations with China and other countries in the region, he proved to be pretty adept at it.
That said, my impression of him as PACOM was not the best. He had many contentious dealings with the leadership at my work and we had many contentious dealings with his staff as a result. He was very close-minded, did not like to hear advice that was contrary to what he had already decided. We had to work closely with the COCOM's and we had a very good working relationship with all of them, we had to in order to accomplish our missions, but not PACOM. Without going into too much detail, he tended to take a very short term view of things at the cost of the long term and went out of his way to impede our work sometimes. This was not an isolated instance or two but a constant theme throughout his tenure as PACOM, and his staff obiviously reflected the attitudes of their commander.
The above does not reflect on his record as a naval officer or as a Naval Flight officer, just my experience with him at work.
An official biography of him, he started out as an RA-5 NFO:
