ADM Fallon on CNN

Just saw the new CENTCOM commander on CNN. What do you think of him? Can a Navy guy - someone without land warfare experience - effectively run the war?

Also he's a NFO - what community and what was his rep?

"What do you think of him? " I had the honor of meeting him when he was Vice CNO (Deputy CNO?)He certainly has my vote, above all.

"Can a Navy guy - someone without land warfare experience - effectively run the war?" No sure how to answer that one! Lets see, "it takes two Admirals to make one General"......:icon_wink :icon_wink

"Also he's a NFO" Not sure being a NFO gives any great advantage, think most NA's with similary leaderships skills, etc could do just as good a job.:) :sleep_125 :sleep_125

He brings to the table certain maritime warfare experience that may play well for possible future contingencies.

Got my vote. Worked for him when he was a Rear Admiral (sel) and accompanied him on a trip to Newport as his "ADC". Tried to get out of it, but glad I went. Very smart, very fair and very even tempered. He didn't get this assignment or rise to 4 star rank by accident.

As to land warfare experience...Admiral "Snuffy" Smith did so well in a similar role in Europe during troubles in Bosnia that he was knighted by Queen of England. He went toe to toe with thugs over there.

He is not 'running' the land wars in Afghanistan or Iraq on a day to day basis, that is left to the Generals in charge of the forces in the respective countries, Lt Gen Eikenberry and Gen Patreaus. I believe he was selected for the CENTCOM job because DOD leadership liked how he led PACOM and handled relations with China and other countries in the region, he proved to be pretty adept at it.

That said, my impression of him as PACOM was not the best. He had many contentious dealings with the leadership at my work and we had many contentious dealings with his staff as a result. He was very close-minded, did not like to hear advice that was contrary to what he had already decided. We had to work closely with the COCOM's and we had a very good working relationship with all of them, we had to in order to accomplish our missions, but not PACOM. Without going into too much detail, he tended to take a very short term view of things at the cost of the long term and went out of his way to impede our work sometimes. This was not an isolated instance or two but a constant theme throughout his tenure as PACOM, and his staff obiviously reflected the attitudes of their commander.

The above does not reflect on his record as a naval officer or as a Naval Flight officer, just my experience with him at work.

An official biography of him, he started out as an RA-5 NFO: http://www.defenselink.mil/bios/biographydetail.aspx?biographyid=49

Yep, RA-5C RSO then A-6's. Was our CAG (CVW-8) off TR during ODS. Pretty good guy. Got the chance to fly with him several times. He liked not having to put his reading glasses on to read the INS in the Prowler. :)

89A got rid of all the old CDIs and I'm 99% sure the whole fleet is at least 89A and I'm pretty sure the whole fleet now has dual EGI systems. There are several software and hardware upgrades beyond that which have come online in the last few years. Last time I flew w/ a CDI was probably early '03.

Hmm, I thought I flew an 89A when the RAG came last time must have been an 89 then as it still had a CDI. That was late 04. When I started the RAG in 86 the sim was still an ICAP I so just had the Doppler Nav, although the back seat trainer had a CDI to make the ICAP II 99 system work. No CBT's so the first time you really saw a CDI was on your first graded front seat hop.

All sims now are dual EGI and 89A. The oddball is the 2F185, which is ICAP III, single EGI and CAINS.:confused: Had no idea what a CDI was until I encountered it in an unupdated CBT which still had both CDNU and CDI procedures for something or other, I think HARM. Certainly made it annoying to click through . . .

That sim used to be the old Blk 89 (2F114?) sim - night graphics only. Someone didn't plan out the sim transition plan very well and we're stuck with a Frankenstein sim years before ICAP III is even around, all while sim time is at an all time premium.

Well despite the oddball nav panel, the graphics in the 187 and 185 are money, and it's nice to have motion again to make flying the ball somewhat more realistic in the sim. Now if I can just stop being a fricking HUD cripple with no HUD . . . I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find an instrument scan around here somewhere. :icon_tong

That said, I've been told the only reason the 185 is there is because they couldn't get the contract cancelled in time. Supposedly it's first out to put in the first Shocker sim in a couple years. Your tax dollars at work.
