This is an odd situation but I thought I would see what you folks have to say. I am 31, had been to OCS a few years back and NPQed, and now trying to get back in. I have a 280-290 PFT, private pilot license, and a lot of work experience. I recently contacted my local OSS (same office I used before but different OSO) and the OSO said everything is fine and that age is only issue. However, I was told not to worry and air might even be possible. We set up an interview for a few days later. The morning of the interview I received a call from OSO saying don't bother coming in because OSO's boss said that the age is an issue and they don't want to deal with it. Do you think this is the truth or could it be a "test" to see my commitment. Naturally I was so upset and didn't know what to do next. I am committed to this and told them I would give up my job in a hearbeat for this opportunity. Should I call back, go to the office in person, or find another OSO? I appreciate all responses as this site is so full of valuable information and resources. Thank you.

Like HH said, don't give up. Keep talking to the OSO and apply and try to get an age waiver. Don't call it quits. Put your app in and complete the process. If they're saying they "don't want to deal with it", it may be just a test.

Thanks for the encouragement. I was just wondering if it is possible for them to prevent someone from applying. I intend on calling back, but is there a time when they say "no" that is is necessary to call another OSO? Or is it a better idea to ask if I can come in for a PFT? Thanks.

Call another OSO. If they don't want to deal with you, fuhgeddabout 'em. Keep calling OSOs until you find someone that will work with you. Age is an issue (especially if you are considering aviation), but age is something that can easily be waived. My best friend was once told that he was "too old"; he is older than you right now, and is a rifle platoon commander. Keep pressing. If you have something to offer the Marine Corps, she will take you.

I was at OCS this past fall. We had several guys in my platoon that were above 30. One was 33.

Thanks again for the encouragement. I just found it strange that over the course of a weekend that the OSO would totally change direction on it. That is why I thought they are testing to see how bad I want it. It makes them not look knowledgeable if there "boss" has to tell them that they cannot help me. I think I will call again and just see if I could come in and pick up an application. Perhaps the SSgt will let me come in.

Definitely don't give up ... but a few things to let yoou know ... and keep in mind this information is from about a year ago.

1. Age waivers for Flight Contracts were not being granted for those over the age of 29. I actually got a waiver but I was 28 at the time and it wasn't just the kind of thing that automatically gets approved. I am now 30 and in Advanced Jet training. There was a study done that showed a high attrition trend coupled with age.

2. There was a guy in my TBS company that had JUST turned 29, was a prior enlisted on the air side with an exceptional service record who was a sure pick to be transitioned to air (also had some VERY good connections with higher ups). He was denied soley due to his age.

3. The thing is that you will be probably around 35-36 by the time you get out of flight school and hit the fleet. Then you have your first flying tour which is like 4 years or something like that.

Now I am not trying to discourage you because I was in a similar situation and I didn't give up but the odds were a little more in my favor as I was below 29 but just keep all of the above in mind so that IF you get deined your prepared.

On another note .... you would almost definitely be able to get a waiver for the ground side as I believe the waivers go up to 33 yrs old. Something to keep in mind and maybe research as a back up option if it is something you think you may enjoy.

Definitely speak to another recruiter but I would be suprised if he was just bullshi##ing you. They WANT you to get accepted ... it's how they meet their quotas .. but ... maybe the rules have changed and he doesn't have the new info. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

Here is a recent example that anything is possible. Granted, this case comes from the enlisted side of the house, but it just goes to show that you need to stay on the attack and not take "no" for an answer.

(Until you are actually in the Marines, in which case sometimes you do have to take "no" for an answer ;) )

Which OSO is this? Did he offer you a ground contract or just tell you not to come back. Call the Houston OSO, 1stLt AL Qadir. 10 years ago, he was one of my enlisted Marines. Tell him LtCol Hein told you to call. He will give you a straight answer. Good luck, Frumby
