Age limit for SNA

Hopefully this question hasn't already been answered and I missed it as I was just searching and reviewing this site, but here it goes.

Does anyone know about the limitations / acceptances for a waiver on the maximum age requirement for SNA?

I'm 37 years old, 20/15 eyesight, physical fit. I have been interested in the military for far too long and allowed life to distract me from asking the right questions and correcting things to which I was ignorant. I currently work in healthcare, so this is a viable option for joining the Navy, however aviation (pilot specifically) is where I would actually like to be. I have a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, both with GPA of 3.7. I only recently spoke to a recruiter and learned that an age waiver for SNA is a possibility. Before I go wasting the recruiter's time, I thought I would put it out on here to see if anyone has any knowledge or experience with the age waiver. And also if you have an honest opinion about how much age affects the selection process, I'd be interested to hear it.

I thank you in advance for anything you're able to offer.

Welcome to the forum. Google “navy program authorizations” and look up pilot/naval aviation.

4. Qualifications

c. Age: Applicants must be at least 19 years old and not have passed their 32nd birthday at time of commissioning.

5. Waivers: In the event an applicant does not meet the maximum age requirement specified in paragraph 4.c., but otherwise has an exceptional record or proven skillset required by the Navy, a waiver may be considered for candidates other than under immediate selection process. No other waivers will be considered. If an age waiver is requested, then follow the steps below prior to the convening of the selection board.

I think your ship has sailed, but the answer is no if you don’t ask.

Questions like these have hit this forum for years - decades. Never hurts to pursue. But you are well outside the demographic for accession absent of other consideration.

Assuming you have a stable career and income and you are interested in aviation; a career switch to being a pilot is highly doable. Any reasonable forecast gives you a potential of 20-25 years of flying professionally.

LCDR Jonny Kim (the SEAL/Doctor/Astronaut/Naval Aviator) got his wings at age 39!

ADM William "Bull" Halsey earned his wings at the tender age of... 52!

It's not impossible, but your chances of getting wings are 0% if you don't send an application.

You can ask, but from others that have tried that were close to your age were rejected. There is nothing wrong with asking, just don't expect a positive result.

That is true but completely different circumstances, I believe ADM Halsey had to do it in order to command a carrier, while LCDR Kim was part of astronaut training.

Both are impressive.

Complete apples to oranges comparing a flight surgeon and WWII to modern day naval aviation requirements.

This is a really, really dumb comparison. Kim got token set of wings. It's not like he's going to be a JO in a squadron, or have any kind of actual experience as a line officer/Naval Aviator flying a fleet jet, or a standard career progression.

Thank you all so much for responding! I understand this endeavor is a long shot, but I agree completely with the mind set of you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. And if the answer is no, I can still try to serve as a Physician Assistant. Thank you again.
