Anthro questions...

So here is my deal. I submit my kit for pilot/nfo and I get a letter back two days after submission saying that I am NBQ. I'm sitting here saying WTF because I'm finding out before my OPO. So I give him a call and he does some research and CNRC is saying my torso is too long, yet when measured at my NRD I am 3" under the sitting height reg, and to top it off I am 3 " under the max height (I'm 74" reg is 77"). As of today CNRC still says I'm no-go according to this PC program that your anthro measurements are put into and in turn says whether or not you are ok. The OPO is pissed and is still trying to find out why I'm getting yanked around.

So I have two questions, has anyone here had this happen to them (physical qualification snags)? Has anyone here ever gone congressional in getting your kit submitted to the boards in this kind of situation? I'm not letting this stop me from trying because as of right now CNRC has no real documented way of showing I am out of regs.

Any info/ideas/tips is appreciated

I am going through the same problem as you. I was measured for my anthro's and cleared by a flight surgeon, but later an NPQ was sent back. I am still trying to sort this out. The advice that the flight surgeon I met with said was to get remeasured by a flight surgeon, if you clear the anthro's they should be able to help you. My problem is getting to meet with a flight surgeon to do it, my OSO is still on that. We went to the Army at Fort Drum, but they do their anthro's different from the other branches, so on to plan B. If I have any luck with this situation I will let you know. And if you have any luck would you let me know?? It would be much appreciated. Good luck, hope things work out for you.

Here are a couple of threads highlighting the word "congressman". The first is a medical DQ regarding ADHD. I assume the congressman would be able to help the same way in your situation if you actually are within regs on this. The second one is more along the lines of applying for a commission, but it compares and contrasts the usefullness of a congressman's backing. Good luck getting in.

I'm just under 76" tall, and had some initial problems with sitting heigth as well. The Navy cleared me initially before calling me back and telling me that standards had changed due to backups in Pensacola. I resubmitted, this time with the Marines as well. They too had to re-measure once, but both services ended up accepting me in the end. Keep at your recruiter. Get measured again, and ask about the possibility of a 'seat fit'. Just some of the things I discovered while struggling with the same.

The day after I found out I went back to the recruiter and re-measured and was still good to go. He signed the form with my anthros on it, his boss signed it, and the NRD CO signed it and faxed it to CNRC and they are still saying no. According to the NRD CO, CNRC has to prove that I am out of reg's, and right now they cannot.

Scotty, what was your sitting height if I may ask? My OPO is meeting with CNRC on the 20th and he says he'll have more info then, but in the meantime I want to keep the ball rolling. I'll keep posting as I things happen.

Josh,

If I may be so bold.....how about if you/your recruiter call the nearest NAS and find the aviation medicine department. Ask them if they can provide a measurement.

Who is CNRC?

I'll try to get the exact number for you, but its right on the limit (somewhere between 38 and 40, if I recall). I tried to get measured in the afternoon after a day of standing, if that gives you an idea. What I eventually ended up having to do was what they call a "seat fit". The flight doc took me out to Miramar and looked at how I fit into a visiting T-34, as well as a T-45 (no idea what they were doing there). Since my helo and multi-engine sitting heights were considered to be within limits, and I 'fit' into the trainers, the only airframe they prohibited me from was the EA-6B. Apparently there is something on the ejection seat that has to be higher than your helmet in order to break through the canopy (Maybe Brett can elaborate further). This aside, I've heard stories about guys actually getting through the jet syllabus before being told they won't fit, after which they end up going another pipeline (any truth to this? I don't know... seems rather $$).
Also, I don't know what the Navy's situation is right now in terms of manpower needs. Like I said, they cleared me initially before lowering the sitting height numbers and sending me across town to the Marines (awesome, in retrospect). The day I found out I got a Marine OCS date, the Navy called me back and said I fit again. Despite what the requirements are on paper, things seem to change an awful lot. Anyway, I'll check into those measurements and get back to you. Keep at 'em, for the time being.

Sucks when they get things screwed up like that, it's the military's way of reminding us that they are indeed a government organization. I've read about the EA-6B, I understand there have been people who've switched platforms because of concerns about ejection clearences. It'd make a lot more sense to me if they'd just catagorize you by your measurements, give you an all-clear if you didn't have any issues or put 'does not qualify for planes X Y and Z' if it's too tight. Instead you're either in or out, or in and then out if they overbook and decide they need to cut back. Anyway, keep pushing and don't get down about it, they'll figure things out eventually. SNAFU has never meant "situation now all fixed up."

Thanks for the insight guys, I've got my NRD going to bat for me pretty good with those guys, and one of the OPO's is supposed to learn some new info in the next few days.

Scotty-

I told my recruiter about how you mentioned a flight doc and doing a seat fit, he seemed very interested in that. I may be able to get enough people involved where one of them can give a for sure go. If it's alright with you could I PM you if I have any more specific Q's about what you went through? I have not and will not mention names or anything of that nature, just " I know of a guy"... Thanks for your help

I'll keep updating..

Congrats on the pro rec wingnut!!

UPDATE

So one of the recruiters at the NRD was in Millington last week and took my kit with him, I guess the problem made its way to a CAPT of some sorts, and now I am all good and my kit is going to the boards tomorrow, 3/3/06. Just wanna say thanks for everybody's tips and advice. Now the real fun begins!

Josh, it's great to hear they finally got everything straightened out for you. Best of luck, and here's hoping we both make it far enough to cross wings some day.
