Any Boxers Out There?

I've just started boxing as an occasional substitute for a run when I'm feeling bored or just don't feel like running, but want the excerise. I have access to a big body bag that I like to pound on for three, five or so minute sessions with a minute or two rest in between. I was wonder if there are any boxers out there that could give me some tips or ideas for a workout. I think this will be especially important the week before we all ship to OCS. I'm going to keep running of course, but I want my legs fresh when I get there, hence boxing as an aerobic excerise alternative.

I always use a 3 minute round and a 1 minute rest. I started off with 3 rounds of shadow boxing, 2 rounds of stretching, and 3 rounds of jump rope. That would always start my workout. After that I would use the heavy bag for three or four rounds. (Tuesdays and Thursdays we would spar) I was trained by a coach so then we would work the speed mitts. I always finished my workouts with 3 rounds on the speed bag and 3 rounds on the double end bag.. I was training for my first amateur fight, but I decided to wait until after OCS (I leave tomorrow) to pick it back up. I think boxing is one of the best conditioning sports. I remember my first couple of weeks I could barely lift my arms. We used three minute rounds because the actual rounds were only 2 minutes. Boxing is a fun sport. I'm going to miss it. Hopefully I can continue it in the Navy. BTW learn how to properly wrap your hands. I fractured a bone in my hand a year ago which set me back. Good luck.

Just do hooks on the heavy bag for 3 min straight without stopping, then take your break and then do it agian. Also, if you can find a gym around where you live you can hit the mitts, that is an excellent workout. Hitting the mitts will also get you ready for sparring. :icon_smil

Last time I checked, boxing was more of an anarobic workout, not realy an alternitive to running or hiking. I have experience in triathalons and wrestling/boxing. Dont get me wrong, boxing will definately keep you in shape and tone your muscles without a doubt. But...I hope you dont expect the endurence you get from boxing to help you with runs and other arobic workouts.

All I know is that after pounding on that bag for over 15 minutes I had a hell of sweat going. I realized there's no substitute for running but sometimes you just need a bit of a break from it. Besides I run a 19-20 min 3 mile as it is and we'll be doing plenty of running at OCS

Depending on the base you end up on, you will realize that there is always a boxing thing on USMC bases. Alot of Marines box, that probably explains the many bar fights. At my old Squadron, we had about 8 to 10 boxers.

I heard it is always diffcult to break bad habbits ones you pick them up. I suggest you work with somebody that has experience in that field especially if you plan to box later.
