API Sept.3

My son is in the Sept. 3rd class. He completed TBS July 8. I don't know if he ever reads this website but he knows that I check into it daily to try and expand my knowledge of Marine and Naval Aviation.

So with API either 2 or 3 weeks away for the people on here, what have you done to this point to get ready? I have only just browsed through the Aero book but I just got done looking at all that stuff last year while getting my master's. Now the swimming...... that's what's got me nervous. Of course everyone has told me that I should be getting in the pool if I had any doubts. I did well during the swim screen a few weeks ago and I figure that anyone that gets through that..... well, they figure that's enough swimming ability to get you started for API. So, that's what I'm going on. That and the fact that I've had a few friends who are now winged or close to it whose swimming ability was somewhat worse than mine. I'm certainly looking forward to finally being able to wear a flight suit to work.

I know some people here in A-pool who have spent a good amount of time learning and memorizing the EP's in the T-34 and other stuff like that. I figured I would just concentrate on what will be coming up first, API, and worry about Primary when I get there.

those people spending time memorizing -34 EPs are wasting time they could spend doing more.. uh, 'productive' things in Pensacola -- you still have Primary ground school and cockpit fams and fams till you need to know those, and they aren't hard. Look, there really is no need to prepare for API. The classes will prepare you plenty for the tests and the swimming will build on itself before the tests. Unless you're a weak swimmer, there's no real need to even hit the pool. Don't go in to API being "that guy" who thinks he knows everything about the T-34 or has the Aero book memorized -- there's absolutely no need. API really isn't difficult at all, so don't sweat it. Just pay attention to what they tell you to highlight in class, listen in the review, ask the prior classes about their test reviews, and you'll be prepared.

But, if you still insist on overly preparing, I'll be glad to send you all my API and Primary FTIs and books if you wanna pay the shipping -- I could use the shelf space :) .

Thanks Squeeze,

That's basically the policy I have been going by since moving down here. Trying to get all the motorcycle riding, fishing in the gulf, and home improvement stuff done while I have the chance rather than trying to get more prepared for API. I figure the Navy is going to take plenty of my time away from my wife and son. There's no sense in helping them out more.

That being said, I'm sure you can understand a slight feeling of nervousness as the time counts down. It's been a long journey to this point in my life and I've known I've wanted to be here for so long. Can't think of any other place I would rather be. It's an exciting time and also very important time to not screw up. But here goes nothing.

Good advice for A-poolers:

Go get your NAV books, then go to the API Instructor Bay and ask the stash Ensign to get you a whiz wheel, TPC, and plotter (at least the whiz wheel). Then do all of your NAV homework. It will make your life WAY easier in Week 4.

that's only if you intend on doing your nav homework in week 4
life is a LOT easier if you just don't do any of it :)

/nav test = 100%, homework done = 0%

They'll give us our books and supplies before we class up? Where would we go to get them?

And as for the swimming. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I swim just about as well as a boulder with weights tied to it and I passed. If you can't do it, they will take the time to make sure you can do it. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt your grades or anything. As for the classes, don't worry about them. Stress about that when you actually have the test. It will make like a lot easier. Most of the instructors gouge you up pretty good prior to the test. Some even give, my favorite, the 50 question review. It's pretty awesome. Just keep your head in the game. The only week that really sucks is NAV. The rest is cake. Good luck.

In response to those who are studying the T-34 EP's and diagrams...don't. Besides the fact that it isn't needed anytime soon, you may have the unlikely event of flying the new T-6, scheduled to replace all of the T-34's, which would render all knowledge of that obsolete. However, if you have low hours or don't have any flight training prior to API, it wouldn't hurt to get familiar with a cockpit of some sort and EP's.

But, like I said, don't waste too much time on the T-34 right now...at least not BEFORE API. Good luck!
