ASQT Question among another

I think this is the proper area that this should go in, but if not, any mod can feel free to move it. I spoke with an enlisted recruiter earlier (by mistake trying to obtain information regarding something completely different), and he stated that since I did not finish high school, that I will have no chance as a Naval Officer, even with a high GPA with a BA of Science degree in aviation flight science. He also had me take the AFQT practice test, which I feel I didn’t do too good on for the sole fact that I had a rough night of sleep, was in a hurry due to my friend waiting in the car, and was not up 100% mentally due to me having a very long day. I feel really exasperating coming out and just saying my score without some knowledge of other people’s scores, or what a good score and a bad score is. The test was 4 sections only, approx. 50 questions.

Also, I know that not graduating high school will hurt me, but I am a very dedicated person who knows what it takes to get somewhere, and I am willing to put forth the effort to get there. I know for a fact that I will graduate with a 3.7 GPA with the major listed above, possibly a double major in aviation management. Along with that, if I get top flight honors, great volunteer work and letters of recommendations, would that overlook the fact that some things were messed up in high school by a mistake, and that I am a willing and dedicated person? I have no history with the law (criminal. I have my typical 5 mph speeding ticket), never done any drugs, never smoked any cigs, and never (even though I turn 21 on Sat) have drank any alcohol with no plans to either (Concentrating on school, not partying.)

Thanks much.

I believe there is a Moderator on this forum that didn't graduate high school and is now a Naval Officer. Don't believe everything that an Enlisted Recruiter tells you.

I've always been told that the officer selection board looks at your whole package, not just something that happened 4 or 5 years ago. It seems that you've come a long way since that time and the board should take that into consideration.

People drop out of high school for various reasons. My kid brother nearly got pulled out of school because my parents didn't like the level of cocaine traffic going through (fortunately he wasn't involved). What really matters is you showing the motivation to go back and get your GED and then move on to college.

As far as the test, don't sweat it too much. The practice tests I took barely even resembled the actual test, and you'll have alot more time to study for them, as you schedule it when you feel ready.

And finally, yes, talk to an officer recruiter. If your school holds career fairs, check up to see if the Navy sends someone down.

Free Hat!
AFQT is a score dervied from the ASVAB test that determines what overall percentile you are in (1-99). To become a naval officer it is not necessary to take the ASVAB only the ASTB.

What you took was a smaller, computerized version of the ASVAB that recruiters can give to show people what the real test will be like. This score is just a representation of how well you might do on the ASVAB. While that test might be a decent indicator of where you might be lacking, it is more important to study what will be on the ASTB then to worry about the ASVAB.

I think you need to get with an officer recruiter pronto..dont listen to the enlisted recruiters, they seem to want to discourage you from going straight to officer and instead want you to enlist first. And def. talk to him about taking the ASTB, as it is a big part of getting selected.

mkoch and Wankertank - I have already been speaking with an Officer recruiter, but I went into the enlisted to find information on the coast guard aux for some LORs.

Sundown - No I am not. The city I live in has one of the highest police to resident ratio in the country, and they hate kids. I've been pulled over (at 3 in the afternoon) because I matched the description of a drunk kid driving around town. They used it as a bs tool to search my vehicle and myself. I also had some cough meds that I took, and registered once when I was pulled over for window tint (smelled an odd smell on my breath). Lucky I had the prescription meds with me to prove it. I do not feel like taking a risk of getting in trouble by some big headed officer of the law here who feels the need to take out anger on people 23 and younger.

dude, you need to move away from that town as soon as possible.

I am moving across to the other side of the state in the fall for college. But even then, I am on a tight leash for drinking as the flight school can test you anytime.

Total BS

I'm calling BS on that enlisted recruiter. As a general rule, enlisted recruiters know nothing about officer programs or their standards. I was home-schooled and never did get any kind of diploma. I just went to MSU-Billings, took a test (I think it was called the ability to benefit test), and worked straight through to my degree. The only thing the boards are going to care about on education is your college work: that you have at least a B.S. and it's legitimate. I'm pro-rec for pilot. Throughout the process my high school credentials have barely been touched, and about the only repsonse elicited has been an "oh, that's interesting" from my recruiter.

Oh and by the way, I'm a teatotaler myself. I barely touch alcohol, just a little chanpagne or a little rum and Pepsi (not Coke, can't stand the stuff). I don't care for the taste of alcohol in anything but weak concentrations and have no particular desire for its effects either. Hope you make it, I don't want to feel too alone.
