ASTB and Reserve DirComm?

contemplating applying again...
Well, I'm back after a three year hiatus...

The whole active duty OCS thing didn't work out so I'm trying something else this time. I've been with the Feds (law enforcement) for nearly three years now, I recently started striking for IS (Reserve IS A-school in Jan/Feb), and my TS/SCI was granted.

I'd like to get a direct commission; so I emailed the local officer recruiter to get the skinny on the whole thing. One thing that I'm confused about is the ATSB. He mentioned it in the email, but I was under the impression that it wasn't required for a Reserve DirComm. I was told this by two engsigns from my NBIT (the new BRIT) class and a DirComm LTJG from my previous unit. I was kind of floored when this come up in the recruiter's email.

The reason I'm concerned is when I orginally took the test I only did 'decent.' I was a poli sci major, so the math and what not wasn't the best subject for me. Now that I've been out of school for 4+ years and doing law enforcement/intel work for the Feds my math skills haven't exactly improved.

My questions:

1. Is the ASTB required for a Navy Reserve DirComm?
2. What does the Intel board look at as far as scores go?

I apologize if this has been covered but I couldn't track it down.

Thanks!

I took the same route - enlisted active duty as an AE, break in service, reserves as an IS. Applied to OCS a couple times, no go. I started working as an Intel analyst full time, applied DIRCOM 1635 and was accepted.

Prior to 2005 (I think it was actually FY 06) DIRCOMs did not require ASTB. Reserve and Active duty recruiting merged, and the ASTB is now required for DIRCOM applications. The applications also go through the same offices as the OCS applications now (at least in my district). There are separate DIRCOM and OCS recruiters though.

As far as what they look for - from my experience, they truly look at the whole person - I don't think any one area will make or break you. I work with DIRCOMS that range in score from the 40's to the 70's ASTB. And as one of the 70's I wasn't accepted the first time up.

Your interviews and evals will weigh heavily as well as full time job and employer reference.

Good luck, and keep pushing towards your goal.

good to know... thanks.

Looks like I need to track down a new study guide and get in gear.

All of my evals are good and my PRT scores are Good Low to Medium. I could probably shave a bit off the run to improve that. All of my reviews for my Federal job have been great and I have lots of training that can carry over to the military side too.

I should be able to get some good letters too...

Time to start cracking!

Thanks again!
