I just happened to bump into the OSO for my school the other day. He's coming up on the 9th or March to administer the ASTB. Do I have enough time? Will failing it affect my future OAR? Basically I feel like I'm getting ambushed... Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Need clarification: Have you already taken the ASTB? If so, and you got qualifying and competitive scores, why is your OAO administering it again?

If this is your first time, I suggest you start studying the Gouge on this website immediately. Know it well and you will do well.

Finally, relax. If you don't do well this time, you can take it again on your own schedule when you have had time to prepare.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. It's not that bad. If you take the practice test on this site, and the go to the library and take the practice test in the ARCO "Military Flight Aptitude Tests" book you should do fine. Both practice tests contain questions that are a little bit harder than the actual test and will prepare you well for it. My biggest fear when I took the test was that I wouldn't finish each section in time. When I finally took it, I found that wasn't an issue at all and I pulled a 6/7/7. I would suggest taking each practice test 2 or 3 times and that should prepare you very well for it. You have about 2 weeks for the test, pleanty of prep time ;)

Good luck with it!

I studied for the ASTB for two days before I took it. And by two days I mean maybe 2/3 hours each day maybe.

But I am an engineer so I didn't spend any time on the math or mechanical comprehension.

Bottom line for me is that the aviation/nautical information was stuff I had never learend so I had to study that and the part where you have to specify the plane orientation.

It's really not that bad. But one tip make sure you know the format and work at a speed where you will finish in time.

First off, don't take it if you aren't ready. You get to take it on your schedule, not your OSO's.

Second, you have plenty of time to study. I took mine on a Monday and only studied the Fri, Sat, & Sun before. I used the Arco book and gouge listed on this site. I pulled out a 8/8/8 56. It wasn't anything too terrible.

Finally, If you do not do well on your first ASTB you may take it 30 days later, and if you do poorly a 2nd time you will have to wait an additional 90 days before you are able to take it for the 3rd and last time. Your scores are completely replaced each time you take it. That means if you do better, then you keep the better score. That also means if you do worse, then you keep the worse scores.

arco vs cliffs notes

Cliff's is written by an AF Officer (ret), ARCO by Naval Officer. Each has that respective slant. The Mechanical Comp in the Cliff's is inadequate for the ASTB.

cool thanks man....when i take the practice test i get between 70% and 90% on each of the test. it that good enough to pass or should i be shooting higher? the LT Col told me not to even bother studying the first time, but ive been studying my butt off. i just hope the FED building isnt snowed in tomorrow and i gotta wait another week.

Clarification

I Just met the OSO for the first time a week ago. He already has several guys in the program at my school, and is coming up to do whatever it is he does on March 9. This is my first time taking the test. I will also be taking my first physical test on the 9th as well. My apologies about the misunderstanding.

Do you feel prepared for either test? Why such a hurry and how often does he come up? I would advise against wasting one of your ASTB tries simply because it is convenient for your OSO. Figure out a way to go to him and take the test or catch him the next time he's in your neck of the woods.

I drove 1 1/2 hours each way to take my ASTB, but I felt ready to take it when I did. Be ready on your own terms- Failing to plan is a plan to fail.
