Hey, I’m taking the test in less then a week and I've been studying about all summer using the Arco books. Anyone have any tips for actually taking the test? Also, what do they look at besides your astb score when they are selecting pilots?

I would say look on this site for gouge then study that, I did and had no problem at all. The similarities between questions on here and the test is ...striking.

If you passed the SAT (old version, not the essay stuff) and passed high school physics (or even took high school physics for that matter) the OAR part will be cake. As for the rest of it (PFAR/FOFAR, etc) the gouge/books will have enough stuff to get you at least a 7 or 8. There will be a few questions that you simply have no way of knowing unless you've spent alot of time on a boat or in a cockpit. The one that got me: what runs through purple pipes on a ship. Moral of the story: read the gouge and don't sweat it, it's just one more piece of paperwork among many more to come.

Timing on the test is huge. It won't matter if you know all the answers if you can't answer the questions in the time allotted. Practice taking the test under actual test conditions (timing, no interruptions, etc.), then you'll be as ready as you can possibly be! Good Luck!!

Verbal I believe is possible to finish but i know that math was very hard to finish in time for me. I had a stopwatch and when i saw about 10 seconds left i marked c all the way down just to have every spot filled.

Do they expect everyone to finish? No way. The test is designed to weed out those who will not be suitable for their field of choice.

Should you set a goal of finishing all the questions in the time allotted? You had better believe it! Any questions that you don't answer are wrong, and they will hurt your scores. The better your scores, the more competitive your package will be.

Remember, there are hundreds of other people out there that want to do the same thing you do. You have to beat them out, and you have to prove that you have what it takes. The ASTB is only the first step in a long process - don't stumble on it.
