from what i understood you take the test and the higher you got the better.
recently i heard as long as you reach the minimum score it doesn't matter because they look at your other things when you apply

also if people who are willing to help over the phone would send me a private message with there contact information that would be great. The forums are awesome but at the same time i want to talk to as many people who have gone through the process as i can

You're right in the fact that they look at an overall package in determining the qualifications of the applicant, but scores, I feel play a significant role in that evaluation. The first time I took it, I got a 6/6/6 52 with a 2.75 GPA, but was involved in a lot of other things as well. Didn't get in though; probably because those ASTB scores were mediocre and the GPA definitely was. The second time I applied i had a 7/8/7 50 with a 2.93 GPA with the rest of my package info about the same and was pro rec'd in the Nov board. I did, however, get another professional interview from an admiral between the two apps and got a good review from him. So, the scores offset one another. If you have a poor GPA it would serve you well to get a high ASTB and the same for the inverse. As far as the rest of your package goes, I would just sort of look at it like a college application. The more extracurricular stuff you have the better. I also got a rec from my employer...if that's any help.

Getting above the minimum score certainly DOES matter. Perhaps your source meant that you can offset a crappy ASTB score set with a high GPA and some good recommendations - but again, your ASTB score does matter. Granted, I haven't seen that many packages, but I haven't seen anyone with the minimums get selected. I'm sure there are a few out there, but you're going to want to try for a high score.

Focus on the complete package, not just astb scores. Extra-curricular activities... athletics varisty or club level, academic fraternities if you have the grades, and at the very least look into doing volunteer work,
