ASTB on Monday

Got the big test on Monday in the afternoon!

Before I take college tests, I like to arrive to the classroom early and relax to free my mind of things. I don't look at my notes at all, and I like to hear people freak out and discuss last second things. Bottom line is that I have a routine before I go into a test, and it works. But, the ASTB will be in the recruiting office and I will be all by myself, opposite to what my routine is.

What are some successful things that you all have done right before "the big one" to get you in the zone?

DO NOT EAT! Its a proven fact that if you eat before a test you will do worse. Its because the blood then will transfer from your brain to your stomach to help your digestion. Also, go to the bathroom beforehand, you only get a 15 min. break after about the first hour or hour and a half.

Eating wont be a problem because I will just be getting off work when I go take the test. And as far as the time, I am only taking the OAR section of the test.

Thanks for the advice!

Oh the irony. :D I keed, I keed.

I just remember showing up early and studying in my car only to have the recruiter pull me out of my pretest safe zone early to take the test since everyone was there. That didn't bother me much since I took a month before hand to prepare. How long have you been studying? Do you feel it was productive?

I have been studying just over a month, but have really been focusing on it these past two weeks. It is amazing how much knowledge you lose when you haven't had a physics class in over three years. So that is my focus point in studying, then the math section. I feel that the reading comprehension will be to my advantage.

That's a tough recruiter, pulling you out of your car. The recruiting office I will be going to is inside a mall, so hopefully I won't be spotted studying in the parking lot.

When I took it, I had a small meal (peanut butter and part of a bagel) and some green tea. A small spike of caffeine can boost you without killing you halfway through the test.

I did pretty well. Sounds like you don't sweat it too much, which is good. It's really not that bad of a test.

One thing though--I got killed on the aeronautical and "boating" info. I studied it, but it's way more in depth than I think the gouge anywhere will prepare you for.
edit: I see you're only taking OAR. I don't know if the aforementioned stuff is on that section.

Good luck.

Yeah, I'm a lucky one not having to take that section, and I like the sound of green tea. It seems like it would freshen me up.

Thanks for the advice on the pretest strategies. I just finished with the OAR section and scored a 51. My recruiter informed me that that was good for SuppO and SWO.

Before the online test, I was told that I would have fifteen minutes inbetween each subtest to relax. After I took the Math section, I left the office to go to the restroom and when I came back.....my reading comprehension subtest already had started with four of the twenty-five minutes wasted!!! I started to panic, but the paragraphs were basic and easy to read (by far, the easiest section). Instead of taking a break and leaving the office after this subtest, I stayed and it showed that there is a three minute break instead of fifteen. Mech. Comp. wasn't too difficult, just remember that water is put in engines to "cool" them down.....I had a blonde moment at that point of the test.

Anyways, my physical is set for the 7th next month, then my application will be sent in. Wish me luck, and thanks again for this forum. It helped me out a lot.
