I am a high school senior this year and have been busy applying for a NROTC scholarship over the summer. I think my interview went well. My question is has anyone taken a aviation dergree as a major and if so did it help or hinder in getting a pilot slot after graduation? I am looking at the program at OU and seems to be a good one. you end up with a commercial/instrument/ multi FAA license at the end. Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

It will not help in selection out of NROTC. Selection is based upon, GPA (heaviest weighting), Major (technical or not) and Command Ranking.

Also I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the NROTC scholarship does not cover the cost of the flight time for those degrees. It will cover the cost of courses and books, but the flight time would be on you...IE lots of money out of pocket.

I have multiple peers who did that type of degree. Some rocked flight school, others did not. Lots of hours, usually means higher than the average joe Situational Awareness, but it can also lead to bad civilian habits that may hinder you in military training.

I personally would reccomend against that degree for NROTC, but I am sure there are those that will disagree.

ASTB also has a lot to do with selection. Major in something that you will enjoy and would want to do outside the Navy.

Your degree won't matter diddly if 1) you can't pass the ASTB or flight physical and 2) you meet whatever requirements needed by NROTC to select your community.

Slayer,

To reiterate what was said before, make sure you major in something that you enjoy. Chances are that if you enjoy what youre studying, you'll probably do better GPA wise. That said, if aviation is your thing, then go for it. Bch said above that NROTC will not cover you flight costs, this is not true. All of the professional pilot majors at Purdue are getting all their gas/flight costs covered in their scholarships. I think its safe to say that aviation majors are the most expensive students from the NROTC standpoint, but that doesnt matter. If you want to major in aviation, then go for it. Just call the unit you'd like to attend and confirm all of this. Need any other help, drop me a PM.

Cool if that is true, then that is one sweet deal, I know when I went through with the application process in 97 that was not the case.

Aviation Technology is MONEY!

bch,

The AvTech mids at our unit definitely have the best deal out of anyone in NROTC. For the pilots, they get all of their gas, planes, and instructors paid for! For the maintainence side, the unit provides the tools to do all of the work in their labs. That's saving over $700 right there. News flash to anyone considering attending a school with AvTech (like Embry Riddle, Purdue, Illinois etc) NROTC is the way to go!!!

Holy Sh*t, I missed the boat on that one. I'll have to resort to selling drugs in college to pay for flying b/c I'm friggin' addicted to it now (just kidding). But that is a good deal.
