I'd say BDCP... you are fighting for not only a slot in OCS, but also the slot in BDCP.

No way, they hand out those BDCP slots. :D

To whoever:

For BDCP, it depends on what job you want. For supply, take a number; for aviation, bust your ass, cuz I had too big time. The availability only landed me an NFO slot, I got lucky and took someone's aviator slot. If you are just concerned about a commission, sure take a biggie size. By the way, direct commission may be easier, but it does not give you active duty status and benefits for the remainder of your college career.

I would say applying directly to OCS would be harder. I say this because there is a slew of people who decide that they want to go Navy their senior year. With some foresight you can beat those people, now I'm not saying getting into BDCP was by any means easy, I just think your only hurting yourself the later you apply.

Good point. When you apply BDCP, you're securing a slot in a future fiscal year, so there are probably more slots open. If you're applying straight up OCS "I can leave immediately" the slots are more limited for the current fiscal year vs. one or two years down the road.

On the app you give a date of when you are available for duty. How far forward do they consider you? The end of the fiscal year? Since a prodigious amount of people invariably put June or July...do they look to put you in classes later in the year? However I am under the impression that October is the fiscal year, have people gotten November and December dates? Just putting in my 2¢ on slot availability.

BDCP Crypto, OCS - July 9, 2005
You have to be able to leave within 12 months unles you are BDCP. The fiscal year starts in October, but the first class of the new fiscal year is the one that graduates first in October, so the July classes are at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 10, 2004 is 01-05). They also often have more classes in the summer months - every week instead of every other week. If you're looking for a slot, I've heard that October is the best time to apply, though.
