I've heard two schools of thought about where to live for API.
1. If you're single then live in the Q because API is only six weeks and you may have to go to TX for Primary.

2. If you're single, sign a lease on an apt. or a house because under the "Military Clause" you can legally break a lease (even if it has only been six weeks) and move to TX anyway.

Well, I'm single and am trying to decide what would be the best route to go since I don't know where I'll have to report after API. Does anyone wiser have any advice?

Well, from what it sounds the wait is pretty long to start API right now. Some on this board have even mentioned about 4 months from checking in to starting API. But, the Navy will only pay to move you and most military clauses will only allow you to break the lease if you move over 50 miles. The problem there is that if you go to Whiting it is less than 50 miles from NAS Pensacola so the Navy wouldn't move you and you may not be able to break the lease. I started API in March '02 so if anyone has any more recent gouge let me know.

When I went through I was told Whiting was far enough to break the lease. I lived on a condo on Perdido beach though. It was furnished, and since the Navy won't move your stuff until primary (for SNA's) it came in handy. I know some people that lived in between, but I wouldn't recommend it, bad for those 0500 briefs.

Tks for the gouge. I heard yesterday from a prior in my Unit who used to live on NAS Pensacola that the BOQ is pretty nice. Plus, I heard that the near the end of API, the academics get pretty demanding and living in the Q makes life (and studying) a whole lot less complicated.

Unsure what your current status is.. but, I would imagine when the government moves you to the Pensacola area, just have government put your things in temp or non-temp storage. Granted, you won't have the goods that were packed, but could always keep your car loaded with junk that you may need (if you have a car).

Then, you could stay at BOQ, then if you go up to Whiting, get a pad up there and have the government deliver your house hold goods.

Talk to a Transportation Officer first, though. I don't remember all the rules for government storage.. But talk to them and see what your options are.

And the person above was right.. if it's less than 50 miles, government won't move your house hold goods again.. but pretty darn sure you can keep them in storage for a bit at least.
