Brown Shoes as a graduation gift..suggestions

My son will graduate this summer/commission and has a start date as an SNA. I want to give him a pair of brown shoes as a graduation/commissioning gift. What shoes/boots are concidered acceptable? I would like to get them from a retail sourse so I could return them if they weren't a good fit. Any help would be appriciated.

Bates Leather Oxfords are what they sell down here at the NEX. I just google searched Bates Leather Oxfords and came up with a bunch of hits. I think they also my sell the Bates Lites. Anyway, you can buy them offline from many different stores. Good Luck!

Here we go again....

The Bates brown leather oxfords are the way to go and there should be no reason to return them if you buy the right size. There's only one style so there's not a whole lot of chance of buying the wrong ones. I still have and wear the pair I bought before I commissioned four years ago. I'd imagine I'll probably have them for several more years.

Brown shoes

From my experience as a relatively recent SNA (winged in april 07), brown shoes are totally acceptable in API. I was a NROTC grad in 2004 and my XO and CO (Commander and Captain) basically told me as soon as i was a designated SNA not to be seen in black shoes...im sure others disagree!
As far as boots go, he will be issued black boots week four of API and should not even think of wearing brown boots till either the FRS or fleet squadron...they are issued there. (every community has its own "policy")
The brown oxfords can be bought at most navy exchanges...make sure you buy khaki socks for them!

I asked a guy in my sqdn who recently had to do the "khaki dance" why he wore black shoes. He said "we're not supposed to as SNAs, right? because we'll jinx ourselves." My response: "So how'd that work out for you?"
