I was just curious as to carrier flight deck operations. Under what circumstances would they a) Clear the carrier deck...

nim-sdiego.jpg

and b) set out most of the aircraft?

I'm just curious, and hopefully someone will be able to inform me?

Thanks

Easiest answer is:

A. When the airwing is not embarked (this one is leaving San Diego and it would be unusual for the airwing to be embarked there)
B. Airwing is embarked and they want to make things look nice going into/out of port somewhere.

Thanks guys. So what's it like to be at sea? If any of you have a trans-atlantic or pacific venture, what's it like to be in the middle of an ocean? Do temps stay mostly constant? In general, what's it like?

070314-N-7780S-265 Arabian Sea (March 14, 2007)- A view of the fantail during a steel beach picnic on the flight deck aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). A steel beach picnic is a planned event where Sailors can take time from their rigorous work schedules to enjoy live music, barbecue and spend time with their shipmates. Stennis, as part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, is on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Maritime Security Operations (MSO). MSO help set the conditions for security and stability, as well as aid counter-terrorism and security efforts to the regional nations. Try reading "Punk's War" by Ward Carroll; a very accurate depiction of life underway and in port.

If you're a Fighter Attack Guy, it's a big sausage fest.

For the rest of us, it's a lot of hard work.

Seriously, the search function is your friend. This is a Navy site. Do you really think what it is like being at sea hasn't been discussed before?
