Carrier Qualification 101

Topper Harley

Good NEWS everyone!
Sorry really new to posting here but I've gotten some awesome information in these forums about becoming a Naval Aviator and I had a question that I hadn't seen asked before and this looked like the thread to do it. If you don't pass your carrier qualifications, what happens? Do you get preformance rolled to another training squadron; do they change your pipeline; do they change your MOS?

Topper, if you don't qualify the first time usually you get another shot at it unless they think your grades have been bad enough that they don't think you can complete with the necessary scores. There is no such thing as being "rolled" into another squadron. There are four advanced jet squadrons and you stay till you complete or attrite. Sometimes those who can't qualify are allowed to redesignate to another aircraft pipeline but this seems pretty rare. Transitioning to a non flying job or a new job entirely seems more common.

Try not to have your heart completely set on strike because you never know what the needs of the navy will be the week you finish primary. However, it is very attainable if you work for it. Once you're there, you will do fine at the boat. The qual rate is very high because they know what they're doing to get you ready.

Thank you sooooo much for the information. It was really helpful. This was disconcerting to me because I'm taking the ASTB in a couple of weeks and becoming a Naval Aviator has been my dream all my life. I began to wonder what would happen if I failed the carrier quals although I know it's probably best to not think about it. One evolution at a time. Thanks again!

Just realize that you will in all likelihood never have to do carrier quals because getting tailhook is a minority selection. Just playing devil's advocate.

Yeah I do know how competitive it is but I'm still confident (You know the whole, anything worth doing is worth doing well attitude). But I especially have the upmost confidence in the instructors to teach me the skills I'll need to qualify.

That right there is the attitude. If you are passionate about STRIKE, go for it.

I think you are worrying about stuff that shouldn't be worried about at this point. Matter of fact, not think but know. Stop your wasting your time on such things and concentrate on what you can control.

They had a helo airborne whenever there were T-45's CQ'ing. A H-60 guy can tell you about what kind of detachments they send. I only saw two helo's total if I recall correctly.

Yep, ship's company is ship's company. Think about it this way, if the carrier is underway and some kind of international incident occurs, it's ideal to have a national asset manned up and ready to go with an unrep or two.
