Change of Designation at OCS

Hey all

I'm a BDCP'er who has received a final select for SNFO upon graduation of OCS. I've read about taking a flight physical prior to attending flight school. And, just out of curiosity, I was wondering what happens to BDCP applicants who do not pass their flight physical. Would I be allowed to apply for a new designator or would I get a medical discharge? Or would something else happen that I'm not aware of? Thanks!

have you had a flight physical before? by a navy flight surgeon? if they said your fit, then don't worry, if you don't pass you have already been commisioned and they will probably let you re-designate. Don't worry yourself either, i started to thinking that maybe the flight surgeon could have been wrong or something but you just gotta worry about that when the time comes.
focus on getting through OCS for know.
by the way when are you supposed to class up for OCS?
i was selected for SNFO and leave for OCS in Jan 4th 2009

Is the physical from a flight surgeon a lot different than the one you get at meps?

For me it was. Some people do some stuff at MEPS that others don't. For example, I did no EKG at MEPS.

Meps was a series of quick checks punctuated by LONG wait periods. NAMI was much more involved, albeit more relaxed in terms of atmosphere (it was a nice respite from the screaming of OCS).

I did the EKG at NAMI. I did like 5 different eye exams: color, depth, chart with corpsman, chart with doc, chart with doc for cyclogplegic (dilated pupils) refraction and microscope in eye to check out retina.

Did blood tests and aeronautical adaptability test etc. It was a lot more than I did at MEPS.

More importantly it's the one that COUNTs. Luckily I had ZERO issues with eyes at NAMI, unlike at MEPS.

Bottom line: MEPS is a bunch of civilians and NCOs who think you're some E-1 going off to boot who just needs a check in the box. NAMI = flight surgeons who KNOW what is at stake.

I was wondering how tough it is to change your designation. I want to be a pilot and my OSO said to take NFO or SWO if they say yes and try to change later. Is that easy or even possible to do?

From what I've read on here, policy varies. But since they've paid you, the Navy generally wants to keep you. It's in the contract too. I believe you apply for a new designator that you're qualified for.
