Changing class dates last minute

Hello all.

I just had my class date changed from 25OCT to 8NOV. This happened, apparently, very recently, and I was just informed.

Do you know if it's possible for my OR or OPO to contact OCS and work with them to change the date back?

I had gotten a friend to come with me on the trip to OCS. I'm in Miami, they work a lot and it was really difficult for them to get to make this trip. I paid for their plane ticket back from Providence, and am even forwarding their rent so they can make this trip.

I've devoted a lot of time/money/planning to this date, so I'm really hoping there is way to fix this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I've already spoken with my OR at my NRD, they're working on it, but I was wondering if maybe anyone here has any experience with the issue or has any insight as to what I can do about it.

I doubt there's anything you can do if your recruiter can't do anything.

Welcome to the Navy and things constantly changing :D

My OCS date was moved as well. I believe it was for spacing for flight school - so we all weren't just sitting down there waiting on API with the Academy guys. But that was just my thought - I don't really know why. A bunch of people in my class had their dates changed (probably 70% of my class were pilots/NFOs).

Good luck getting it changed back....it sucks when you make plans and then have to break them.

Since it's such a short delay, why not make the trip early with your friend, and then take the rest of the time for yourself to sight-see and travel the area. Believe me... before OCS is a GREAT time for some alone time. It allows you to think and get your mindset ready... and while counter-intuitive on first thought, you won't have a MOMENT of privacy for a good many weeks, so some alone time is WELL timed right before OCS.

I wouldn't mind staying if I had a place to stay. I am practically out of money, which is part of the reason the class date switch is painful. I've been living of what was left of my savings from working at Guitar Center and now am borrowing money for my bills from my dad. Though I'm definitely spending a lot of time with my friends and family before heading up there. So a bit more extra time is a plus.

And I would imagine, 60Flyer, that they'd just class you up for API later if there was a bottleneck problem right? I figure the OCS class-up thing wouldn't affect that right? That's just my guess too though.

Well if you want to get me a guitar at a discount in the meanwhile, I can return the favor with beer and/or lodging money. :icon_smil

And yes they'll class you up later, but if there's a bottleneck NOW, and you're OCS (non-BDCP) and not getting paid, they'd rather delay you now when they're not paying you, then to have you sit on your ass in A-pool collecting O-1 pay.

Yep, they would have to class you up later for API if there was a wait and pay you to sit on your butt and do absolutely nothing (and possibly pay you per diem). So they're going to keep you where you are if there isn't a spot for you and pay you nothing. Makes much more sense for them - like Otto already said.

I had a death in the family right before OCS and they would only move me back one date. Originally I got moved back two dates, but then they bumped it forward. Kinda sucked. Actually it really sucked. But if this is what you want, sometimes you have to put up with it.

Anyways, in the end I'm glad I got the class team that I got. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh, just wait. My first deployment got extended by 4 months at the last minute. Plenty of guys that had weddings all planned out that got squashed. Lots of pissed off fiancees back home and deposit dollars lost.

It's the Navy. Plans change. Those changes will often cost you money. That's why it's best not to make plans too far in advance. The fleet guys on here know exactly what I'm talking about. Just look at all the threads on here about guys trying to get married during flight school. Personal plans and the Navy do not mix well.

See if the airline will refund the plane tickets or just stay that extra time in Newport, charge it on a credit card, and pay the card back when you get done with OCS. You should have a surplus of money when you get out of OCS. It's not like you are blowing your money at the bar every night, at least not until you get to CandiO phase, and those stories could make a totally different thread.

Update :

Thanks everyone for your advice. My OR and OPO got my orders reverted back to 25 OCT.

I really wasn't expecting it to get my request approved, but man is that a load off my shoulders.
