SECNAV receives fond farewell. With new President, political appointees like Secretary of the Navy must tender their resignations. SECDEF is staying for near future, but the Honorable Dr Donald C Winter has to make way for his replacement.

I think it's time for the President to reach across the metaphorical aisle again and invite the Hon. John Lehman back into gov't service. Or, shit, maybe Jim Webb, seeing as he's had the job before, too, and he's now a Dem.

Don Winter is a great guy. Personable, easy-going, good sense of humor, but scary-smart and can really focus on what's important. He once gave a talk in the morning to a bunch of engineers and designers about a new satellite system, then to a bunch of Boy Scouts about the same system in the afternoon. Both groups thought they fully understood the system, and enjoyed the briefing.

Now, the question is, will he come back to Manhattan Beach and live the good life, or stay in DC, take a position on a defense contractor's board, become a lobbyist, and make a gozillion dollars.

I'd choose the latter.

Jim Webb is staying in the Senate. He's a widely respected southern Democrat with military experience who is seen as strong on defense. He's a rising star. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix for President (in some capacity) in 8 years.
