Cherry Point MCAS - Seafood

Wasn't sure where to put this but since Cherry Point is a Marine base I thought I'd try here first.

Cpl Rocketman (USMC Reserve) is starting a new job in Havelock working for a company providing network support for MCAS Cherry Point. I was helping him get moved in today and we were thinking about grabbing some local seafood for dinner.

Can anyone recommend a good place nearby? Beauford, Morehead City etc would all work.

Thanks!!

I really liked Crabby Pattie's there in Havelock. For about 4 months straight I ate there once or twice a week!

I grew up in New Bern (slightly more fun than Havelock) and the standard recommendation was Sanitary in Morehead. I also really like Amos Mosquitos, which is over the bridge in Atlantic Beach on the sound side. If you're looking for some really cheap seafood though, I'd go to El's drive-in and grab a shrimp burger.

I have a whole mess of redneck cousins in Newport, so I've spent a few summers there...
+1 on Sanitary; it is an institution. And I've had the shrimp burgers at El's quite a few times, I thought they were great (I don't believe I've seen a shrimp burger on a menu anywhere other than that area).

El's may be the next place I try when I go back in a couple of months. My mom grew up in Wilmington NC. I remember her talking about fried shrimp burgers when I was a kid.

Crabby Pattie's in Havelock is hard to miss. This morning I saw Sanitary on the way down to Beaufort along with a lot of other good places to eat once I got there. I ended up eating boiled shrimp for lunch in a little bar/burger joint on Turner St. Just down from The Net House Restaurant. Looks like some good fishing in Beaufort too.

To top it off on the way out of Havelock I got to watch some guy working on the perfect touch and go in his F/A 18. I think this trip was the most fun I've ever had moving someone else's trash across the state.

I'll be back.

My wife and I had Sanitary ONCE...vowed we would never go back. It was terrible. YRMV. The only thing I've had at El's was their chili/slaw burger. I was told that's the place to go for those, although I was very much mis-informed. Hopefully their shrimp burgers are better than the cheese burgers. CP's has shrimp burgers, po boys, etc...which I've eaten a ton of. If you like chili/slaw burgers, Newport's Croatan Cafe is the best place. Not the best burger I've had, but definitely the best in the area.

Sanitary was delicious when I went there. Or you can just take a boat out on the sound and catch your own shrimp.

I'm from the area and spend alot of time between New Bern and the coast. Surprisingly, its pretty hart to find good seafood in and around Morehead. Stay away from the Sanitary..its a tourist trap and the food sux.

Heres my suggestions:

New Bern: Captain Ratty's
Beaufort: Finz Grill
Morehead: Miss Willis'
AB: Channel Marker (Sometimes)

I'll add to the El's recommendation. My family used to stop by there on the way home from the beach all the time. Good eats.
