"Yeah, we had one of those, "Well, back in my T-45 days" guys in my squadron. He was savaged daily in the readyroom until he STFU."
-Brett from Boat Players thread

I've been meaning to ask a question along these lines and didn't want to hijack the boat thread:

How does one's performance in flight school affect how they're seen in the fleet?

obviously, one's performance affects how you select and the fitreps one receives while here but if a flight student does well in advanced does anyone care after we get our wings.
i'm assuming the other end of the spectrum (ie doing poorly) does affect your reputation.

The short answer is it doesnt affect it at all. I have progressed in the fleet much further than guys who did much better in flight school.
If you really suck and all your peers know it it could affect you, an example is
2 pump pilot: "Hey what is the story on Enx/Lt Benotz?"
Guy who has been in the squadron for two months: "Well he was always in his khakis/charlies at flight school"
2 Pump pilot: "Hmmmmmmm"

After about a year in the fleet and a developed professional reputation it matters very little

Edit: Doing well at anything is noted and a good thing.

Concur w/ Skid. Nobody knows or cares how you did in the pipeline. With that in mind, you do start building your reputation in the RAG. No one expects you to come out of the RAG as a tactical genius, but if you're sh!t hot, or really bad in the airplane, word tends to get around. That being said, I've seen guys who sucked in flight school, then sucked in the RAG, and then sucked in the fleet. My advice: Don't suck. :)

Good times,

Brett

Once you are in a squadron, no one other than a pathetic fool talks about how he/she/it did "in training".

It doesn't matter how you did in the Training Command --- AFTER you get your Fleet seat --- of course: EVERYTHING MATTERS --- PRIOR TO SEAT SELECTION. Maybe I'm stating the obvious .....

Then, it matters how you do in the RAG --- an "unofficial hip-pocket" report passes from the RAG to your squadron. If someone tells you that it doesn't happen, don't believe it. I've seen them -- hard copy -- with my two beady eyes. It sets the pace for you, for better or for worse, from the first day you report aboard in your first Fleet squadron.

You either live up to the RAG report or you live it down ..... you're BUSTED ...

ALSO ...... as long as were are talking about "performance" and how it reflects on you .....

For the past 100 years (+/-) I have been drilling holes in the sky with a 747 for fun(:icon_roll ?) and profit (:) !) and have @ 19,000 hours of total time --- but I am still being "judged" by any and all I fly with .... as well as the company and the "Man".... but it NEVER ends !!!

And who do you suppose is my harshest critic ??? ME, that's who .......

... and the rest of you "type A, AA, and AAA" personalities ??? You'd better get used to it as well ....

Right again, amigo

Once again, A4s has got it soooo right. No body wants to even hear about the training command. But the RAG, it's just like A4s says. And if you're in a RAG class and a Cat II or Cat III heading for your squadron catches your act, then you're on center stage big time. Foul-up and your're toast. :( Do well, you're ready to roll when you arrive in the squadron. :D

dont forget this...whats said on this website or others has followed people into the fleet.

Monkey balls.

i'm serious...had an entire AOM on it....due to what was said by someone on this site. What was said was emailed to that person's RAG and to their fleet squadron before he left advanced. If thats not a reputation i dont know what is.

That's why I always wear a mask in public. But not the one with the zippered mouth like Brett wears. :D

That was a very extreme case.

So I guess I'll be joining Cyclic at the Brass Rail then? ;)

I must be missing out by skipping so many threads! I want to know what was so heinous it ended up following someone to the RAG.
