Ok, here's the deal. I have decent vision (20/30) and never wore glasses until IFS. I want to wear contacts for primary because of better peripheral vision and comfort and am wondering if I need to see a doc to give me a waiver or if I can just wear them? If I need a waiver, is it easy to get one? Do you have to have a history of wearing them? I'm supposed to leave for Corpus this week so I wanted to get this done early before getting to Primary.

Technically, you need a waiver, but it shouldn't be a big deal. Just get seen by a flight doc and opto and you should be good to go.

I was 20/25-20/30 for a while, and I could wear contacts. Like Brett said, contact the flight doc.

I think I had to carry glasses in the plane with me, but I honestly cannot remember.

Thanks a lot. So, should I go to NASC at Branch Medical or go to NOMI where I had my flight physical to get the waiver? I already bought some contacts so I don't need a prescription or anything. Again, thanks for the help.

Unless there's some weird studentism, just go to BMC. On the bright side, when you get your wings, the Navy will start paying for your contacts.

You might want to wait until you get to Primary. You don't really have a flight doc assigned to you while in API/Pool, so if you wait until Primary, you'll actually have someone who'll work for you and doesn't just see you as yet another appointment for the day.

Good call. Thanks for the advice. I'm leaving this week so I'll just wait until I get assigned a particular flight doc and bring it up with him.

You'll have to go to medical to get an admin upchit. You can bring it up then. Depending on how frantic the pace is that day, you might get somewhere, otherwise, just wait until you're done w/ systems and CPTs and then try and set up an appointment.
