Contraband at OCS

I know there is an official list of what to bring on the OCS website, but I was wondering about the suggested "contraband" items which many recommend to bring and keep locked up in your locker. If someone were to bring these items such as a sleeping bag, would it be wise to keep them in your bag when you check in or store them in your vehicle until a later time?

When you check in, you'll put everything for the first week into a plastic garbage bag that will be checked by the candi-o's responsible for you. During that first week you'll have no need for contraband (or really, any chance to take advantage of it). After the first week, it pretty much depends on your drill instructor. While I was in OCS, our drill instructor never really searched or inspected our rooms--but the classes living down the hall got their rooms "inspected" and trashed on a regular basis and would never have dared to keep a cell phone. They did have sleeping bags, though, and the "caterpillar pushups" were one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. My advice: take whatever you think you'll want or need and leave it in the car until you get a feel for what's happening (usually about the 4th week). If nothing else, by week 10 you can have/use whatever you want, so it'll be nice to have it there.
