Correcting 20/20 vision?

Anyone heard of NOMI deciding to require someone with 20/20 to wear glasses? I passed my vision test and have 20/20 vision, but they are going to require me to wear glasses when I fly that will adjust my vision to 20/10!

What gives?

That bites...
You may want to talk to one of the (qualified) flight docs. I have heard of people with good vision getting glasses before though so you may not have any luck.

Did you just take the NOMI on the 16th?

It's possible that you may be just slightly myopic or hyperoptic, but not enough to warrant a full "change" in your vision. They may just want you to wear glasses when you fly to help you focus a little more clearly, thus taking some strain out of your eyes.

Of course, you'll never know unless you ask. It's your health, and it's their job to let you know what the deal is.

NOMI prescribed me glasses with 20/20 as well. It was because of my depth perception so I don't know anything about trying to get you to 20/10. However, I wore my glasses home when I got them and determined that I saw more clearly without them so I went back to NOMI and retook the eye exam. Somehow I scored what I needed and sweettalked my way out of the glasses. They actually let me use the glasses for the test to see what it was I was looking for (depth perception-wise) and then take them off and determine the correct answer. Hey, I'm wasn't arguing, I took my new up-chit with no waivers and was on my way!

I still got an upchit and am good to go. When you visit a regular doctor for physical or otherwise, it is usually pretty easy to figure out what they are doing and why - not the case with the eye docs! I don't know if I am myopic or whatever, and it would have taken a good long discussion to figure out what they were talking about and as long as I'm still qualified, I'm not sure I care that much...

They told me they were called "cheaters" and that other people they had given them to really liked them.

When I was reading the eye chart, I missed two letters on the 20/20 line .... but I was able to get all the letters on the line below (smaller) - I'm sure that had some effect on all this, but who knows....

Anyone know how I get these glasses? The doctors literally said "they just somehow get to whoever we prescribe them to" and couldn't tell me any more than that...

Hmmm, hey Snizo, how's that pool stash treating you? Anyway, when I came down for OCS, they said I had 20/30 and gave me glasses. Needless to say I didn't wear them throughout OCS because they looked like crap. Then, when I went in for my 25 year exam, I had improved to 20/20. That was fine with them and apparently didn't raise any alarms. Not since OCS have they told me anything about still having to wear glasses while flying. Sooo, I'm going to assume I don't have to until they tell me otherwise. And if I do have to wear them, they better give me some better looking ones....

I thought that was the recline!
Wow, Makana. That's the first time in my life I've ever heard of the Nami-whammy being NICE to anybody. Everyobody knows that the medical porfession is the natural enemy of the aviation profession, or simply "Doctor is not our Friend."

I don't have any personal knowledge to reference but I have heard people say NAMI/NOMI is not "out to get us" like they used to be. Like I said, I wasn't arguing!

I didn't think the Nami whammy (NOMI) was all that bad. I mean other then the unqualled flight docs, in training, shinning lights into my eyes for a half hour looking for defects that didnt exist... other then that it was pretty harmless.

I had a physical just prior to departing TBS. When it came time to visit Harvard on the Hill for the expected poking and prodding, it turns out all I needed was new anthros and a quick eye exam. I was in and out in less than an hour with an up chit. The only thing that sucked is that I had to fast the night prior for no reason, but I got over that when I was leaving NASP at 0800.
