CW San Diego Duty Station

Not sure where to post this so starting a new thread.

I did some research and found that the likely duty stations for an O1 CW are FT Meade, Kunia HI, and a small amount going to Texas or Georgia. I've seen some mixed information on whether or not San Diego is available as an initial duty station so I was just wondering - is that an option and if so, how likely is it for an ensign to be placed there?

Think you answered your own question…

On the CW community page it gives an overview on first assignments primarily going to the NIOC…

Does that mean SD is out of the question for a first tour? Probably but definitely not 100% no. For assignments afterwards, probably more options to be stationed there.

Once you’re in the school house after OCS you’ll get a run down on the community to include various billets and whatnot.

Please, please, please do not set your heart on being stationed in any particular duty station. Part of the adventure of a career in the Navy is going to new places and discovering all they have to offer. If you've adopted a mindset that you want to be stationed in location X for reasons Y and Z, you're going to set yourself up for disappointment. Nobody here can predict where you'll be stationed.

The better questions to ask here are if you have a choice between duty station A vs. B. Then people with experience can weigh in here on the relative merits of each. Best of luck.

Thanks for the advice, I agree - I don’t really mind where I get placed since there aren’t any NIOCs near where I’m from anyways, but I just wanted to know all my options so I have an idea about the places I’m likely to end up at.

The interesting thing with the military in general is what others experience will never be exactly the same as what you will experience, I had a young man that put in as a CW and somehow he spent his entire 4 years at Ft Meade. Then another CW that I didn't put in but went in about the same time out of my office ended up on the Blue Ridge for his first duty station, do this day I have no idea how that happened.

If you want the best opportunity to get stationed in SD as a first tour go SWO, but even so that’s a bit competitive since it’s a popular-ish location.

What might work in your favor eventually is if you’re still young and single as it’s a bit easier to find somewhere in SD just for yourself than say a whole family.

Fort Meade has all the big cyber commands, so it’s very possible to jump commands around base or within the same command.

CW Friend of mine spent his last 10 years at fort Meade before retiring.
