Death in the Family while at OCS

If an immediate family member dies while you're at OCS, do they grant you leave? A non-immediate family member?

When my grandfather died while I was in enlisted boot camp they did not give me the option to go home for the funeral then come back. I would imagine the rules are pretty much the same for OCS and boot camp in those regards.

That happened to a guy in a later class while I was there. I don't think he left because he didn't want to roll. I'm pretty sure that if you miss 4 or 5 days straight for whatever reason, you're heading to H.

We had a guy in my class in Pensacola who was having marital issues/child welfare issues. During week 9 or 10 he left for about a week and came back with no real implications other than sitting 12 hour ROOD watches every night for the next week.

One of the guys in my class had his dad pass away while at OCS. He was able to fly back to Jersey, take care of things, and then he came back and classed up with the class right behind us. No reapplying, no hassle.

As Harrier Dude alluded to - you can pretty much expect that you'll be allowed to for an immediate family member (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother). Any extended family member, I wouldn't count on it. UNLESS they are In Loco Parentis ("In the Place of a Parent") that is, it's your grandmother/grandfather/aunt/uncle/etc... that raised you as if you were their son/daughter. Those are pretty much the rules in the fleet. They are more flexible when stateside (I've been given emergency leave for a grandparent), but when on deployment they are pretty hard and fast about them.

We had a guy take emergency leave towards the later portion of OCS, week 7-9 time range, and he missed 3-4 days, and came back no problem. That was for the death of his grandpa.

Immediate family members will almost always be grounds for emergency leave. How long you're gone would determine if you rolled, but that would be the least of your worries at that point. Non-immediate family members are usually case by case. Just tell your family not to keel over while you're at OCS and everything will be fine.:D

My grandpa kicked the bucket when I was at OCS. He suffocated to death on a soup bone. I got emergency leave.

You have a way with words nick!

I gotta keep positive man. Looking at it from the big picture (as officers are trained to do), I can honestly say that in the midst of this tragic occurance, me and grandpa got something out of it. I got leave, he got cremated :icon_smil
