Are the 'good times' here again ... ??? Probably a little premature as it's definitely 'early' in the airline recovery game ... but still, a 'win' is mo' bettah' than a 'loss', yea-as ??? Consolidation, reduced capacity, and increased prices & fees ... you've gotta' make a profit, or you die.

NYT: Airlines Find a Route to Profit in Quarter

Anyway ... my DAL stock is up over 10% today ... sooooooooo today, Happy Hour starts early. :)

Good to hear. Now I just gotta figure out how to get hired by one, and hopefully one that will be around for a while.

Cheers!

We just had our 10th consecutive profitable quarter.

Yeah, I know ... I've contributed a couple of 1st class R/T's to at least 5 of 'em ... ever since the bean-counters @ NWA/DAL decided there was 'no money' in the HNL routes.

Let's hope HAWAIIAN doesn't try to fly everywhere, all 'da time ... that's moved more than one airline from the black into the red column ...

You've gotta' make a profit, or you die.

Spent $550 round trip last weekend for two tickets from DC to Charleston SC on toy airplanes and another $100 to check two bags. If they can't make a profit on that route then they shouldn't be in business.

It was well worth it though as it involved a lot of fun with good friends and having Adm James Flatley talk about life at Pax River in the early 60's and flying the C-130 aboard the Fid over Gin and Tonics.

American has almost 2,000 guys furloughed. Continental has about 150, UPS has 109. Not to mention everyone has 10+ years of resumes piled up in their recruitment offices...good luck. I think its gonna be a while yet.

An old squadron-mate who's there said NetJets will be hiring this spring too. Of course it may be to fill in for all the folks going back to the majors.

I was about to rain on his negative parade but you beat me to it.. Also lots of Corporate stuff out there hiring too.. AA is also deep in that recall list trying to find bodies.

My father said Delta hired a couple hundred pilots. (They got several thousand applicants) They even started hiring flight attendants. Only a couple hundred though, 85,000 applicants. Wow.

Its good to see profits, things were pretty bad back awhile ago.

Not to pile on, but F.Y.I.: it doesn't work that way ... 10+ years don't 'pile up' ... not even 3+ years .... mebbe 4-5 feet (I've literally seen THAT during the 'glory days', and it was only @ 6-10 months accumulation) but most of those in the 'stack' aren't 'qualified' from the get-go.

But anyway, it won't 'be a while', and as others have indicated, NWA/DAL has been hiring for some time. And just like the USN -- TIMING IS EVERYTHING in airline hiring and 'sooner rather than later' is always 'da BEST time !!! "Timing" has affected me (for good) on more than one occasion. Especially when 'line seniority'
is KING (a new concept for many/most of you -- and it's not the 'same' as USN 'seniority) .

I think CCommander just wants the rest of you to go back to sleep so CCommander can get an interview ... ??? :D

JUST KIDDING !!!
(at least about the last sentence)

Semi-recent 'gouge' on hiring for the Regionals & "The Show" from one of the pilot 'wailing wall' websites ... :

  • American Eagle – has recalled all furloughed pilots and will hire over 200 pilots in 2010
    and 300 pilots in 2011.
  • Air Wisconsin – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • Colgan Airlines – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • CommutAir – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • Compass Airlines – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • GoJet – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • Pinnacle Airlines – is interviewing and hiring pilots for First Officer positions.
  • SkyWest – is interviewing and hiring pilots.
  • AirTran – has recalled all furloughed pilots, they are interviewing and hiring.
  • Delta Airlines – has recalled all furloughed pilots and has announced it will be
interviewing and hiring beginning in August. Intends to hire 240 pilots. (opinion: it's going to be significantly MORE ... 2011 probably an 'expansion' year)
  • Hawaiin Airlines – is interviewing and hiring pilots.
  • ASA – has recalled all furloughed pilots.
  • Republic Airlines – has recalled all furloughed pilots.
Check out 'Airline Pilot Central - Forums - Majors' for mo' bettah' 'gouge' ... one thread on 'the latest/greatest about DELTA' has over 4 million ... that's million ... hits.

If you want to get hired -- you've got to 'be there' early & often, you've got to be willing to go 'anywhere, anytime' to get 'the job', you've GOT to be 'organized', you NEED to network w/ other guys (sometimes just to stay sane), you have to (of course) have the minimum qualifications (more is always bettah'), you need to come across as a 'company man' (in the sense of dedicated, professional & dependable -- not a suck-up), and be the 'guy' who everyone wants to be driving 'da bus when their Momma is ridin' in it ...

DELTA has always had a 'soft spot' for former military pilots ... but they aren't gonna' wait for you ... if they are in an 'expansion mode', they will hire whomever is available & qualified.

For you guys who make it to 'The Show' in the future ... welcome to the bottom of the list. All things considered -- it's a GREAT place to be ... :)

Awesome thread, thanks to everyone for their insight. As an Eastern Pilots son this is making me feel almost optomistic.

This is very true, my there is not single person in my fathers (Chief line check pilot on the Airbus) office area that isnt ex-military, except him. Even though they are hiring, its extremely competetive.
