Has anybody heard of this new program in the Corps? Detachment One is supposed to be a new breed of special forces the Corps is putting together. They will be training with the SEALs. Does anybody have info on this program?

All I really know is that it is the first Marine Corps special forces unit. It is made up of 81 hand selected Marines (E-5 and above) and 5 Corpsman. I read an article about them somewhere - it didn't give too many details.

I don't know how to do all that link stuff. However, if you go to the website for the Force Recon Association they have some archived newsletters. The most recent ones have an article or two that are rather interesting. The plan is to eventually see two to four more of these units and, as a result, there will be a need for more personnel in the reconnaissance community. My question,is since its advertised as a "unique MAGTF unit", will some of you aviation types on here also deploy as part a supporting element of these dets? These are great days we are living in ladies!

Um, I don't think they are going to swim and hump there arses on deep insersions so I think it would be pretty safe to say that there will be some air squadrines assigned to support these bad boys. Niceeee

I've always wondered why they never considered Recon ond Scout Sniper as SpecOp. They do all that deep strike and LRRP stuff, seems pretty "special" to me. Anyone have any insight into this?

Marine Corps didn't want to be part of Special Operations Command when it was created in the early 80's; from what I understand in Vietnam there were plenty of what we would consider special forces missions undertaken by Marines

Look at it form the perspective of special operations command. It is a joint thing and the Marines don’t like to play with others all that often. And they especially would hate to have an Air Force guy in charge of them. There is however, a huge pot of money with socom. If you’ve ever talked with SEALs, it is ridiculous the amount of supply they get. Essentially, they go on a huge shopping spree at REI to get whatever they need. On the other side, when a married Marine E-4 needs a new set of cammies, the family goes hungry that week.
The snipers/recon/force work for Marine commanders, and hence are not part of SOCOM, that is why you probably hear that they are not “special.” There have been a few articles in the Gazette the past few months about it. There are arguments for and against having Marines work with socom, supposedly it has been tried in the past, but didn’t work out for some reason.
I don’t remember everything, but from the side of a young hard charger, “Fuk, Yeah, where can I sign up.” While the opposing side is that it has the potential to be a career-limiting move. One of those things where if you make it into the community, your infantry brothers suddenly feel that they don’t have the biggest penis any more and try to keep you down...just my take on the articles I read.

There are a lot of reasons Marines never did SOCOM in the past. In my opinion, it boils down to two things. One, the Marine Corps thinks of itself as a whole as an elite force able to snoop and poop in its own right. Two, when one sends forces to SOCOM, SOCOM owns those forces. They aren't available for MEUs or any other Marine commander. Force Recon, which could be considered a spec ops unit, exists to support the needs of the MEF (Marine Expeditionary FORCE) CO. Snipers are division and regimental assets who get detted out to support COs intelligence needs (actually observation is a bigger part of the job than shooting).

This new unit sounds as if it's a little different spin on Spec Ops than the SEALS or greenie beanies. It's not going to be just another bunch of guys with a bunch of goofy accessories bolted on their M4 carbines. According to the Marine Times, they'll actually be a mix of several different MOS. The SigInt and comm guys stuck out in my mind when I read it. It sounded kind of like the Gerber Multi Purpose Tool of SOCOM
