Do I need eye surgery?

Tennessee

New Member
I am wanting to be a pilot, but my vision is not good at all. I believe its around 20/60 or 20/80. This is, I think, the only thing that would set me back physically.

I have not even taken the ASTB, but I am seriously thinking about being a pilot, and I am really motivated to know as much about flying before I make up my mind.

If you guys have any info on what I can do to help my eye situation, even which surgery shows the best results, then please let me know.

Also, I have not taken my physical yet so if anyone knows little things that they look for that can DQ someone that wouldn't originally be as obvious as terrible vision, then please fill me in.

Just a quick couple quick things to keep in mind Tennessee. 1) You need to wait at least 6 months after you have your eye surgery before you can apply, so you better decide soon, and 2) Research says that your eyes will continue to deteriorate until you are ~25 so if you are younger than that you might want to hold off till then.

For everything else, check out the link that blarged gave you.

The 25 thing is true but the typical rule of thumb is just to wait until your sight hasn't changed for three years. It'd be pretty rough for most guys needing surgery when they want to be pilots if they had to wait until they were 25. Best thing to do is talk to your optometrist about it.

I'm in the same boat as you Tennesee. Only difference is my sight is worse. I'd go ahead and set up an evaluation with someone as soon as possible so you can start getting price points and laying some groundwork. You should also get in touch with an OR so you can start working on your packet while you get your eyes taken care of.
