Does everyone and their grandma want jets?

I'm just curious as to how this works out in general. Now, I know there is no definite answer to this question, which is why i'm asking for the general outcome. I would love to fly jets but I have nothing against helos...but are people generally happy in the end with what they get? Does everyone go in wanting jets but change their mind later on?

I appologize if this queston has been asked a million times but the answer is always changing, so share your thoughts.

Be #1, get what you want. :)

Not everyone wants jets. UAV's are really popular right now because there aren't that many EP's. Plus, you're almost guaranteed a slot in UAV Top Gun. :)

Never a guarantee, though...

Stick around long enough and you'll become familiar with the phrase "Needs of the Service."

Deviation from controlled flight:

1. Gamepad- Neutralize
2. Reset Button- Push

If UAV still unresponsive:
3. Gamepad Batteries- Replace

Engine Failure in Flight:

1. Zoom/Glide 125 KTS
2. Terrorist Camp- Locate
3. Kamikaze procedure- Execute

Secretly everyone wants jets. Now they'll tell you they don't so they can borrow your gouge. In the end, the same people who you studied with, allowed to see your notes, and let cry on your shoulder will scurry into a dark corner of their apartment when it's time to fill out their dream sheets. They'll speak in tongues of how the jet life sucks, airshows, an adoring public, fast cars, fast this, and fast that. In the end, they will shrug their shoulders when selections are announced and tell you how they must have marked the wrong box, ooooppps. And oooppss that their last name starts with a "Jickd" and your with a "Jicke" and since the last jet slot was given out your stuck with helo's. It was alphabet soup and your NSS's were the same, enjoy. BWAHAAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA! I'm kidding of course. Select what you want and if you study hard you'll probably get it. I'm serious, maybe. BWAAAA HAAAA HAA HAAA! We aviator's love a good joke, pull my thorn, go on.

No

Once you get into flight training and get exposed to the different types of flying you are in a far better place to select the community you want -- or think you want.

I enjoyed my tacair flights in the training command but knew I didn't want VF or VA. In small tacair airplanes you are strapped in six ways from Sunday, wearing not only a flight suit but integrated survival harness, G-suit, helmet, O2 mask, and gloves. Temps inside the airplane run from 130 on the ground to 40 at altitude. You have to listen to the other guy's breathing, and your own, through the mic in the mask. The helmet and visor restrict your view. You are almost immobilized and can turn a little bit to each side if you strain against the straps. The seat is as hard as a plank. The ejection foot restraints restrict even foot movement. On the plus side, the view is wonderful and the sensation of flight if superb. Also, it just plain rocks to go zooming along at high speed.

My first choice was VAH (A-3s of A-5s) and I got my second: P-3s. It turned out to be the best break I could have gotten. I LOVED VP and jumping all over Soviet subs' asses and rigging their destroyers and frigates in a zoom-by at 500 feet above the waves. Liberty in VP is simply the best, period. You go EVERYWHERE (go www.navlog.org) and see EVERYTHING. In tacair you get to spend six months aboard the boat seeing the inside of a very small room.

Hope this helps.

The only sure ways to get a Jet Slot

1)Be NO.1 in your class
2)Get picked up by ENJJPT
3)Get picked as a pilot by an ANG unit that flies jets

No, my grandmother never watned jets, she was pretty content with the Wright flyer. And I'm pretty sure helos are going to be my first choice. Unless UAVs open up, after reading airgreg's post, it opened my eyes.

Ask me about ninjas!
Just selected helos today (1st choice). And they're better. Why? Because they don't fly, they just beat the air into submission.

Not to mention that some people think they want jets, then puke enough times (or just don't like the aerobatics) in the T-whatevertheyareflying and decide that helos are pretty cool.

Others study hard, get number one, and select helos or transport because there weren't any jet slots that drop. "Needs of the Corps, devildog."

Bottom line, the smart people know what they want, study hard to reach that goal, then just hope for the best. If you are only joining to get jets, go ahead and smell the coffee right now, before it gets moldy.
