Ok, a lot of guys here are either Student of Fleet Naval Aviators/Flight Officers, or college students, so there HAS to be people here that play games. Anyone pick up Doom 3?

I didn't buy it... yet (only because they didn't have it at the store last night).

I heard its amazing but I'm concerned that it won't run well on my computer because its got such demanding system requirements.

I'll probably buy it before I go to El Centro at the end of the month

I'm more than sure my computer can handle it

Microsoft Windows 2000/XP; Pentium IV 1.5 GHz or AMD Athlon 1.7 GHz XP processor or higher; 384MB RAM; 8x Speed CD-ROM drive (1200KB/sec sustained transfer rate) and latest drivers; 1.7GB of uncompressed free hard disk space (plus 400MB for Windows swap file); 100% DirectXR 9.0b compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers; 100% Windows 2000/XP compatible mouse, keyboard and latest drivers; 3D hardware Accelerator Card Required - 100% DirectXR 9.0b compatible 64MB Hardware Accelerated video card and the latest drivers.

64MB card REQUIRED...ouch. That's gonna screw a lotta people.

128 MB cards are cheap now. I bought one back in Oct and it barely broke 200 if I remember. nVidia 5600FX Ultra

What you don't know is that he has this little dungeon that he lives in... constantly pirating the world with this homemade super computer... every now and then sunlight will break his eye lids, when he goes flying. :tongue_12

And WTF's with your quotes?!?!

Dude... don't forget about the homemade armory too, sheesh, you know me better than that!

And the quotes are to make people go "HUH!?". Seems like it worked ;)

I bought it at Babbages last night. They have quite a few copies in stock. Very impressive. However if you dont have a decent system life is gonna be sucking. Also the Doom3 forums have some tweaks that are almost necessary to make the game run smooth. But when you finally get it running smooth...oh yeah. Im glad I bought it.

Yeah, I have to run it at 640x480 to be "combat smooth". It runs ok at 800x600, but it'd be a problem while fighting.

Gary, what forum and what tweaks. Please post em :)

This one is the start of a long thread with several tweaks listed.
http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoom/topic.asp?fid=5733&tid=1438663&p=1

This one also has some info. Im looking for the other sites I looked at last night.
http://doom3.filefront.com/file.news?ID=11538

Essentially here is what you want to do.
go into the Doom3/Base folder and open up DoomConfig.cfg in notepad. Be sure to rename and save the original file.

Look for these lines and change them as necessary.

r_gamma "1" 1.2 is the best value, but some systems need up to 1.4
com_videoRam "x" should be set you whatever your video card's ram is ie 64
r_swapinterval "0" default is 0, change it to 1
seta image_useCache "0" change to 1 to help the next tweak work better
seta image_cacheMegs "20" any value from 96 to 256 works. ideally it should be 1/4 your system RAM
seta r_displayrefresh "0" change to whatever your video card's refresh rate is for the resolution you are running ie 72
seta image_cacheMink "200" 20480 and 25600 work well

there are some more tweaks and fps tests, etc but these have worked well on my system. if you want a general idea of what your system will run it at without tweaks bring up the console in the game and type in timedemo demo1
console is alt+ctrl+~

lowflier, you running that on a 64MB card system? If you do, how's it run? There's no way I'll upgrading mine anytime soon(notebook).

Yeah Im running it on a GeForce4 MX. Its not too bad. With the tweaks and low quality Im running 800x600 pretty smooth. With Medium quality I would get some roughness in combat. And for low quality it still looks very nice! I have a 2.17Ghz Athlon, with 512MB DDR RAM and a 160Gig hard drive. Here is a site that Fly Navy showed me with some more tweaks.
