drug use

Hello,
Last year I put down on my DoDMERB paperwork that I had tried pot in 2000 (when I was 14 years old). Well, here I am at the Naval Academy Prep School and I already have a Congressional nomination and on top of that I am guaranteed into Annapolis anyway. I am concerned however about when I go to NAMI after I graduate because I have heard that they will NPQ you immediately for any history of illegal drug use. I this true? I had figured beforehand that I had better be honest, but I just want to know now if there's no way out of it if I would be disquallified automatically. I appreciate the help.

Absolutely not true. Many people in Naval Aviation have experimental or recreational use of drugs in their past (emphasis on past).

Absolutely not true.

If you've ever tried drugs, seen drugs, or even THOUGHT about drugs, you're screwed.

I suggest you start looking for a new career ASAP.

First of all, I certainly appreciate your honesty. Lesser folks would not mention it. Good on ya'; it is the best way to go.

I have never known NAMI to care about (your) past drug use. Since the Navy has taken you so far up the ladder to an Academy appointment, my guess is that your past is not anything to worry about.

Good luck to you.

Thanks, Guys. It's something that's really been bugging me for a while and I am glad to finally hear that from people who actually know what they're talking about.

Angel,

Just wanted to tell ya what I had heard. Before I signed my papers the officer in charge of it all gave me a form and said that now was my chance to confess to any drug use in the past and to sign that you understood it was a mistake and to reject all further drug use. He said being honest now would not be detrimental in any way to my future, but lying about it could potentially end any hope of a navy career. I think you made the right choice in being honest, BZ. Drugs are sooo uncool anyway =)

I went to NAMI as a drug waiver and was cleared hot. The subject never even came up. No worries.

Angel,

You've got some good advice here. Good luck at USNA, and if you want to know more about life there, PM me. Also, send a PM to DanMav1156... he's one of your future classmates.

This may already be a dead horse but just to give you a warm fuzzy from a recruiter perspective, you are absolutely fine as long as you are not going to do it again. Relax, you came clean and will have zero problems.

Just a note though, if you have every tried LSD or Heroine, you are most likely SOL; there are waivers for just about everything, but these two are particularly nasty and numbers being what they are, they do not need to entertain waivers for the most part.
