Dumb question - What all is involved in API?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I've just been accepted as a BDCP NFO and know that API is what happens and prepares you for flight school but what all is involved with it? I have read about swimming (no specifics, but just there will be swimming) and test on Aero, Engines, etc.

Can someone break it down for me? Also, do you do API immediately after OCS or during?

Trying to soak it all in.

API is 6 weeks long, the first 4 weeks are split up between 6 classes and survival swimming (starting in just a bathing suit and working you up to full flight gear). the last 2 weeks are the 'fun' things, the dunker, bay ops, parachute drag, redneck parasailing, etc.

Check this for more info, it's located in the REQUIRED READING SECTION.

you know how normal in normal parasailing they hook you up to a boat? well, in redneck parasailing you're hooked up to a truck.

Ya but the landings are a LOT harder...

I'm well aware of the recent parasailing incident, but I got the impression Patmack was just saying that land parasailing landings were harder than water ones (we'll assume commercial boat parasailing)? If so, he's correct. Did someone remove a post before I read the quote above?

What's with "yeah, it's pretty dumb"? We were all new here once and were excited to participate in an active thread. Not to mention API has experienced some big changes recently. Maybe the guy just wants up to date info.

Penguin hit it on the head. Probably from my lack of direction, and busy with my cubicle work with the shoes, but regardless, hammering on the new guy/gal is going to stop, and stop now.

I consider myself pretty damn salty (maybe I should borrow Zab's salty avatar?), but even I have questions that need to be answered, and you sure as hell don't see the really senior (read senile old farts) bubbas around here come ****ting on me for asking, to what to them is a common, nub-ish, and probably stupid/uninformed question.

So, let's play nice, help the new guys and gals out with their questions, welcome them to the site, and show them that we are as cool as we think we are, and not the tools that they think from a "dude, that was stupid" post. The one and only goal of this site is to help the next group on. I have been helped, and have spent a lot of time helping a bunch of you out there as you have gone from college student to jet jockey, helo driver or prop bubba.

If you don't like the post, resist the urge to increase your post count, and make us as a community and profession look bad. This is probably a knee jerk reaction to the recent flooding of high school kid question, how can I get jets, and what are my chances? These are all legitimate questions from someone that WANTS to be where we are! We ALL sweated service selection, primary selection, the NAMI whammy, and tubing an API test, and god knows what other hurdles throughout our career, becuase they keep on coming.

I am not calling names and singling people out. What I am doing is standing (ok sitting at a computer typing) in front of my peers, and some hopefuls, some of which WILL be in the wardroom with us someday, and telling you the pendulum of sarcasm and sh!tting on the new poster is stopping now. I will take this personal, and make this ugly if it persists, to the length of clipping moderator priviledges, and if continues, deleting accounts. I doubt it will come to that, but I am making my intentions known.

Once again, probably all stems from lack of direction, or supervision on my part. My apologies to the next generation of aviators, who are coming here looking for answers on how to make it to their Winging, and the Coveted Wings of Gold. We will do better.

Purdue Jones, sorry for the threadjack, but that needed to be said.

Thank you for that. I am a new person here and very interested inthis site and all the information that is to be found here. However, I have been discouraged the last few times reading posts, and witnessing rudeness towards people asking questions. For all those who are not familiar with posting board-type sites, that is the basis for a site like this one. To come together and share information and answer questions that have probably been asked 100 times. That is the nature of the beast, and if we want this forum to grow and enlighten then we need to be more tolerant.

Another thing that is happening a lot is that people are telling new guys to use a search function instead of asking a question. That's great for some things, but with all of the changes going on right now in the Navy the policy a few months ago may not be correct as of a month ago, or even a few days ago. This forum is designed to give the latest, most up to date information possible. There's a link to another thread started over 3 years ago under the 'similar threads' down here at the bottom titled "dumb question". Think the answer to his "dumb question" has changed since 2002?

You can PM me with questions. I'm currently in Week 3 of API and I know some guys who have recently finished so I can get what is probably the most recent info.
