this is the book 'the pacific' series was based on.
..
to say it puts things in perspective is an understatememt.

one observation the author made that sticks,

"the best and worst marines were among the lieutenents and the captains."

Great Book. It's on the Commandant's reading list, don't know which rank, but it's there.

Read it 2 yrs ago. It is riveting & gruesome reading. WWII Marines had the toughest jobs in the war.

I read it years ago and then by chance met Sid Phillips here in Mobile. His son was doing some work for me and noticed my USMC decal, told me I should stop at the house and say HI to his Dad who was on the Canal in WW2. So I did and it turned into about a three hour visit. During that time he mentioned Sledge and I told him the book was in my library. Phillips was most proud of his letter promoting him to Corporal and it was signed by LtCol Chesty Puller.

Read the book last fall. It was one of the best books I've read in a long while. I'd recommend it to anyone in the military or even thinking about joining.

I followed it up with "Churchill's Secret Agent". Not quite as captivating as "With the Old Breed", but good none the less. It details the doings of Max Ciampoli, who was a covert agent during WWII that took his orders directly from Mr Churchill. Another WWII history book I'd put on a reading list.

I started reading it and then left it in the seat back pocket of a plane I was on. I couldn't put it down for that flight though. I think I made it about 1/4 of the way through. I need to buy another copy, because it's one of the better reads I've had this year. I +1 it.
