Just out of curiosity, if I'm getting E-5 single BAH already and paying for my current apartment, will I continue to receive BAH while I'm training in OCS?
Hmm, I hope you're right, STG1. Although methinks it wouldn't be TAD for moi.Orders to OCS are considered TAD not a PCS because it is less than 6 months; so yes, you should retain your current BAH until you graduate.
I'm not sure how PSD will handle OCS, but to your example, you don't lose BAH when you're deployed (ship or shore), so I'm not sure where you came up with that. Maybe you're thinking about BAS/COMRATS?In my experience the government will only pay to 'house' you in one place at a time if you're single. My guess is that OCS would be similar to when you deploy; they won't pay for you to maintain your home stateside when they're providing you housing in country. Bummer. There might be a better answer and/or official references floating around on these forums, though.
I know the Marines do some shady stuff with their enlisted member's money (like take away per diem they're entitled to in Iwakuni), so I can't speak to your experiences in the Corps, but when you get to the Navy (assuming that's where you're headed), that will not happen.Brett, appreciate the insight. Looks like I stand corrected. Also looks like I need to have a long talk with my last admin section.
Pertinent section of JFTR is Part E, Section 1. I think the question remains about service transfers going to OCS, though. I hope that becomes a relevant concern for me in the next month!
Okay, now I need a little guidance of my own on this issue... My situation: Active duty E-6 (Marine Corps). Single (according to the military - actually engaged and cohabitating). I actually spoke to a few Navy PSD folks about it because I couldn't find any guidance in MilPersMan or JTFR (I'm sorry, Brett, I've let you down). Surprisingly, they couldn't give me a definite answer either.
The question: Will I retain my BAH when I go to OCS?
The PSD folks were split on this. Some said that since I was being separated from the Corps, I would be considered just as the civilians attending OCS. Others said I would retain my E6 pay, so I should retain BAH as well. I know my cohabitating situation has no effect on the answer, but it does have a bearing on my ability to just put my stuff in storage for a few months while I'm in OCS. Oh, and one more thing that may or may not make a difference in this situation: I am actually stationed very near NavSta Newport currently and therefore would not be moving anyway to get to OCS (there will be no 'travel days' or mileage or anything for me to get to OCS)
My current BAH is about $1600/month. That's a lot of money to 'lose' over the course of 12 weeks when I'm still paying rent. Does anybody out there have personal experience making the leap from Marine Corps or other service to Navy OCS while single? Single folks are hard to come by these days...![]()
Thank you, NavyOffRec. I will definitely remember that. Good to have a definite answer.I can answer part of this since I have had guys in similar situation, since you are currently an E6 you will attend OCS as an E6, where the hiccups normally occur is in the enlistment paperwork, the processor needs to talk to Kerri Dean in Millington so they (millington) understand why they need to sign you as an E6.
