Hi all. Right now I'm fishing around and try to know from people in this forum who got there commission from the inside. What is the process like? Thanks in advance...

I am in the process of being commissioned from enlisted air force to Marine corps officer. The process isn't all that bad. It is just hectic being from a different branch.

As a 2nd Lt who was a Sgt now I can speak somewhat intelligently on the subject. You can wait until your EAS get out go to school and Apply in the PLC/OCC program. You can also try for MECEP but that can take a long time. Most of the guys I know who have gone that route were Sgts, or Staff Sgts. You can find a local college and take enough classes and apply for the OCS program. If you have enough time in you can apply for Warrant Officer. I have some friends who are going that route and it is somewhat similar to applying to OCS but you need to make it to Sgt of Staff Sgt to even be considered eligible for commissioning to a W-1. The route I took was to get off of active duty a couple of months early on a school cut. Join a reserve unit, go to school, Apply and get accepted to the PLC program. Complete PLC Sr, graduate from school and then get commissioned. I did however not go back to my reserve unit upon completing PLC Jr because school, work, my job and family were draining so much of my time that something had to give so I took the option of going Inactive Reserve instead of Regular Reserves. My drilling unit was three hours away and the reserve unit three blocks from my house wasn't taking any more prior active NCO's.

The thing is I have already my BS with me and I'm a CPL licensee. I know, I know ...I should be applying directly for OCS slot but the thing is I want it that way, through enlistment, the longer way. Is it hard to apply for MCP?

Speak somewhat intellegently? Was that some sort of slam regarding my intellegance? If so, get over yourself, if not, sorry I took it that way. I was referring to how he could go into OCS while enlisted instead of waiting for his EAS. I am going through the process of getting a conditional release from my Air force unit to attend OCS. I wasn't sure what branch Rayman was enlisted/enlisting in.

I don't regret for one minute that I enlisted first. But at the same time, all of my (non-prior) compadres are starting there flying careers 4-5 years younger than I am.

If I would have attempted college right after high school, I more than likely would have failed out and would still be working on a ranch for $50 a day. I credit the USMC for giving me the decipline and determination I needed to get through college (not to mention the funds). Keep in mind this is ME, lots of people do it right out of high school. I'm not trying to talk you into enlisting, if you think you can handle college right now both financially and academically, then go for it.

If you go Active duty enlisted, then you can pretty much bet on serving your 4 years before getting picked up for OCS. I found out that I had a better chance of doing my 4 and getting out and going PLC. It's not impossible, just very competitive. Crowbar has a lot more knowledge on this subject being that he is currently in one of these programs.

There's no "wrong" answer, you just have to find out what route works for you.

Good luck!

I am in agreement with E5B there is no right or wrong answer on this subject. If you are considering enlisting see what options the reserves can do for you. Be enlisted, get experience with a drilling unit, go to college and go to PLC during the summers. Many of the guys I was in PLC with went this route and it seemed to work for them quite well.

First off, I'm a degree holder now as what I have stated in my prior post above. I'll try to apply for MCP (Meritorious Commissioning Program, think). It is for enlisted personnel who has the a degreee in his/her belt that wants to apply for commissioning. Actually, I've considered enlisting for the Navy just for me to avail of the age waiver because I'm already way off the limit to fly. I'm 30 years old now and a resident alien. It's my motivation to get into the program (fly for the Marines). I know that it will be the longer route but it's all part of the risk that I know will make my life more interesting.

Guys, thanks for all the replies. I've already considered every possible avenues that are at hand and I chose the Marines to take me were I wanna be. I know that I'll love it in the Corps.

Im in the same boat. My NFO application was just rejected. My OSO said there might not be another available NFO slot for a year. There are no ground slots, and I dont have the eyes for NA, so I am seriously considering enlisting. I dont know what to do. I want to be a Marine Officer. If thats my only shot, Ill take it.

Also, I may have mentioned this in previous posts... I have a Bud who enlisted with a degree and his series commander at boot camp found out and asked him if he ever thought about becoming an Officer. He said yes and the Capt submitted his package (ECP) while he was still in boot camp. He then went to C&E school (29 Palms) then proceeded to his first duty station which just so happened to be Quantico. No sooner than he got there he got word that his ECP package was accepted and he joined the next OCS class. All together I think he spent less than 6 months enlisted. He is now a 1st Lt in charge of a Communication Plt in Okinawa.

Keep in mind this is active duty we're talking about. If you go reserves, you'll be working through an OSO applying for PLC or OCC.

Guys, thanks for your posts.

reapergm, your time will come. Just keep applying and show everyone how much want this. Just make sure that what ever you choose, you'll enjoy whatever you'll be doing in your MOS. Home is where your heart is and once your enjoying what your doing, you'll be more productive. As for me, I'll definitely go active. It would be filled more with experience.

A word to the wise about the age issue. My husband has been active duty for the past 12 years, he just turned 30. He applied for OCC 184 and was selected for a pilot spot. We found out today that his age waiver didn't get approved, so he is out even though the board selected him. His package was outstanding: 280 PFT, 3.87 GPA, wonderful references ,etc. But none of that stuff mattered. MCRC said no more old guys are going to be flying. This totally sucks!
