Not defeatist at all; on a gut-level, I've always felt we'd a.) move on Iran at some point and b.) do so successfully...There's plenty of threads on that already.
As someone's quoted Churchill on here, "Jaw, jaw, jaw is better than war, war, war." If Europe is realizing that jaw(3) isn't working, and they stand by their previous statements that an Iranian bomb is unacceptable, the options look pretty limited...None (war/more fruitless dithering/acceptance?) is appealing.
