I actually had to put a rubber coating on them today to keep it from spinning out so easily. The battery actually last longer than the original Power Wheels one. The OEM one is rated for 6V at 9.5 Ah and the one in there now is 18V at 14Ah. I am looking into getting rubber pneumatic tires, but have yet to find someone who can give me some advice on what to get.

You can get the batteries at Fry's Electronics if you have one, or the local electronics store. If you want the same speed go with a 6V, we got 7mph out of a 12V, or go all out and get an 18V for max speed. The motors are rated at 18V so I wouldn't do anymore than that if you don't want to buy new ones. Make sure you get a battery with a pretty good Ah rating or it will go dead fast. Anything over 10 Ah will be fine.
As far as the high speed lock out goes, his just has an auto brake when you let off the gas pedal. Is this what you mean? It's kinda cool cause every time he stops he does a sliding 180 hand-brake style skid. Since I put the rubber spray on the tires this has gotten a lot better. If your daughter is good at it, I would definitely recommend the 12V battery, not too much power and you can leave the tires plastic, but you still get more speed.

Our ATV came with a screw that prevented the selection of the 2nd speed. I removed it the first day my son had the thing. So you can get batteries with the same connector huh?

Mine is different, no screw I am aware of. The bateries will not have the same connection, but its really easy to put new ones on. White (or sometimes pink) is positive and black is always ground/negative. Radio Shack has all the connectors you'll need. I also had to cut the battery compartement a little bit to get the batteries to fit. Here's a pic:

OK, I put some rubber on the tires by cutting up rubber matting into strips and screwing it to the tires. It works awesome and now he can cruise it at 12 mph and have a little control. Still fishtails off the line though.

He has "a little control" at 12 mph! I bet Mom loves that.

This is easily the coolest thing I have ever seen. Reminds me of my dad building models with me. He'd get bored, and we'd wind up blowing them up.
